Lowkey I feel like Caitlyn is the type of person who Mel thought and/or wished Jayce was. That being a person in an already extremely politically-advantageous position who, nonetheless, is politically naive & has little to no interest in exerting their own power.

Jayce was very naive & extremely easily persuaded at first, yes. But at the end of the day, it took literally less than a week of him having a crumb of legitimate institutional power before he started swinging his own weight around on the council & elsewhere. Seriously. In the span of a couple days he effectively brute-forced his way into being the defacto head of the council by retiring Heimerdinger, & then back-doored a peace deal with Silco. All without Mel's knowledge or encouragement, leaving her a little blindsided.

Whereas Caitlyn, in contrast, stayed more or less on Ambessa's leash for the better part of a year, no matter how many misgivings she had. And honestly, if it weren't for her pre-existing relationship with Vi, there's no doubt in my mind that Caitlyn would've continued being on Ambessa's leash. She showed no signs of actually disobeying Ambessa before she & Vi reconnected. I think Cait would've been super susceptible to Mel's softer, less immediately violent approach to politicking & state craft. If she was uncomfortable yet complacent under Ambessa, then she would've been downright peachy under Mel.

notes: bonus sicktember fic! I added this one and another caitvi one to the lineup. I was combining a lot of days and wanted to stretch it out a teensy bit more, sicktember is too fun! 💗

“This could have been avoided, you know,” Mel says with a small sigh. She finishes wringing out a washcloth into the bowl of cold water on the nightstand, then tenderly lays the damp cloth on Caitlyn’s forehead. 

Caitlyn makes a small, contented hum once the cool fabric touches her skin. “I hardly think even I have the power to prevent a fever, love,” she says hoarsely, giving Mel a wry look. Her cheeks are flushed a deep red and her eyes are hazy, which makes Mel’s chest flutter with worry. As much as she tries to keep a calm and collected outer demeanor, she truly hates seeing her girlfriend so ill. 

“No, but you do have the power to rest when you’re clearly unwell and working yourself to the bone,” Mel says, her voice delicate but her eyebrows raised pointedly. “As I believe I suggested, on numerous occasions.” 

Caitlyn gives her a small, slightly apologetic grin. “I wasn’t feeling that unwell, honestly. There’s no use in taking time off work for a head cold.” 

Mel rolls her eyes and leans down to kiss Caitlyn’s warm cheek. “You truly are the most stubborn woman I’ve ever met,” she sighs long-sufferingly. But there’s still a slight, amused curve to her lips. 

“Second only to you,” Caitlyn chuckles, which quickly turns into a cough. Mel helps her sit up a little, rubbing slow circles on her back until she’s able to catch her breath again. Then Caitlyn sneezes sharply and groans afterward, rubbing the bridge of her nose. “Gods, I’m such a mess,” she mutters with a disgruntled sniffle. 

“You are,” Mel smiles, gently guiding Caitlyn to lay back down against the pillows. She tucks a strand of Caitlyn’s navy, slightly fever-damp hair behind her ear, then presses a kiss to the corner of her lips. “But you’re my mess.” 

“You always get so sentimental when I’m ill,” Caitlyn smirks, looking up at her with an amused gleam in her blue gaze. “You turn so mushy.” 

Mel huffs, fussing with the blankets and pulling them higher over Caitlyn’s chest. “Nonsense,” she says with a shake of her head. “I am simply being practical.” 

“You’re being soft,” Caitlyn murmurs, reaching for Mel’s hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. “I appreciate you looking after me, love.” 

“I wouldn’t have to look after you if you would simply listen to reason,” Mel sighs. She readjusts the cloth on Caitlyn’s forehead, then climbs into bed. Caitlyn shuffles over to make room, and Mel stretches out an arm so that Caitlyn can rest against her, her warm face tucked into Mel’s neck. 

“I’m sorry,” Caitlyn murmurs against her skin, more serious now. “I truly didn’t think it would get this bad.” 

“I know.” Mel kisses the top of her hair and pulls Caitlyn closer. She can feel the heat radiating off the woman in her arms and the ghost of her breath against her neck as she struggles to breathe through her blocked nose. Mel’s heart tugs with a mix of love and concern, and she starts gently scratching her long nails against Caitlyn’s scalp in the way she loves. 

“Don’t apologize, my darling,” Mel hums, her voice quiet. She kisses her again, burying her nose in the familiar scent of Caitlyn’s hair. “Just rest and get well, please.” 

“I’ll do my best,” Caitlyn mumbles, already sounding drowsy. She snuggles in closer to Mel, her body relaxing against her. 

“And I’ll be here,” Mel murmurs, her own eyes falling shut. “For as long as you need.”
