In an interview, Gates shared, “I’m lucky to have a serious girlfriend,” acknowledging Hurd’s support during his memoir writing process, Source Code: My Beginnings, in which he thanked her and other close friends for their valuable feedback.
Paula Hurd, a University of Texas graduate with a degree in business administration, is known for her philanthropic efforts, real estate development, and work as an event organizer. She is also a mother of two daughters, Kathryn and Kelly. Gates’ openness about his relationship marks a personal milestone as he continues to balance his personal life with his philanthropic endeavors.
In a separate interview with The Times of London, Gates spoke candidly about his divorce from Melinda Gates, calling it “the mistake I most regret.” Reflecting on the heartache caused by their separation in May 2021 after 27 years of marriage, Gates expressed optimism about his current state, stating, “I’m more cheerful now.” Despite the pain of the divorce, he noted the shared experiences and the deep connection they had built over the years, particularly through their time at Microsoft and their work together on the Gates Foundation.
Gates emphasized their ongoing commitment to their family, saying, “Melinda and I still see each other — we have three kids and two grandchildren.” He expressed pride in their children’s values and well-being. However, he admitted that the divorce was a difficult and emotionally challenging period, describing it as “miserable for me and Melinda for at least two years.
