The Anonymous Ones - SZA
“The Anonymous Ones,” is the newest single by SZA, written for the recent film release, Dear Evan Hansen. The song was written by actress Amandla Stenberg and she says it is about all the strangers you pass by in the street never knowing what they are truly going through, but every now and then you get a glimpse of something in their eyes that can tell you more than they have even shared with those in their everyday lives. Since we only tend to see the outsides of peoples’ lives, we can assume that they have it all together, not knowing the true things they are dealing with personally. Every now and then the masks slip off and you get to catch the real version of them. In the music video, SZA is seen giving up singing, longing to be just another anonymous person walking the streets. She seems to recognize something in the young girl sitting on the bench drawing next to her, perhaps something she sees in herself. Often when it comes to mental health struggles, people can feel like they are completely alone and feel like they have to hide, not knowing how many people could actually relate to them if society didn’t make them feel so ashamed. It truly is a tragedy. Beautiful song though!
