Is Jason X a good movie? I think so. I’m not saying it’s an award-winner, but it accomplishes what it wants, which makes it successful. How exactly? I'll tell you in a bit.

In 2010, the dreaded Jason Voorhees (Kane Hodder) is being held at the Crystal Lake Research Facility. One night, the machete-wielding killer escapes from his restraints but is lured into a cryogenic chamber by Dr. Rowan (Lexa Doig), who also winds up frozen. Awoken 445 years later, Rowan desperately tries to explain to the group of students, space marines and scientists aboard the spaceship Grendel that Jason’s killing spree is about to begin again.

This is a Friday the 13th sequel, which means it’s made for people that have seen a good chunk, maybe even all of the previous installments of the series. The fans know these films are not all that great. Some of them are, either legitimately or only as slasher films. Ignoring Jason Goes to Hell completely and embracing the zombie Jason we know and love, it never seeks great performances, characters who have enough brains to stand a chance at survival, complex symbolism, or a plot that’s original beyond its gimmicky setting. Those would've been nice, but not essential, not in a 10th chapter. In terms of what you want/expect to see, it delivers. You have the gratuitous sex and nudity, plenty of gruesome and over-the-top kills, and Jason at his Jason-iest.

Jason X fulfilling its promises isn’t the reason why I consider this film good. What tips it over the edge is the fact that without a doubt, this film is a parody of itself. It’s “Part 10: Jason innnn Spaaaaaace!” It viewers won't get scared by people getting grabbed by the shoulder. It realizes we're ready to make fun of the stupid teenagers, the people splitting up, the fact that premarital sex, alcohol, and drugs = death. It beats you to the punch by having the characters yell out jokes and giving Jason Voorhees comical things to do while keeping him in character. It'll make you laugh-out-loud.

I can’t argue with the criticisms I’ve heard directed towards Jason X. It’s a cheap knockoff of Alien. None of these characters have ever seen a horror film before, and in a world where Jason Voorhees is renown no less! The plot is predictable. The special effects are dated, even for 2001. There’s no character development. the dialogue is flat. I can hardly think of anything that’s not bad at one point or another. Judging it as a horror comedy, however, you can’t argue with the number of laughs that it generates.

Jason X is better by being worse. You can laugh with it AND at it. Fans of the franchise will enjoy it, those who see the Friday the 13th films and enjoy them ironically will as well. Can I actually recommend it? Not in the same way that I can something that’s good “for real”. Since I did talk and poke fun of it non-stop I’ll give it a “So Bad it’s good rating” but you can make an argument for it being legitimate. (On DVD, May 13, 2016)
