Canon fact: Elena is the heroine of the show. The diaries in the title refers to hers and Stefan’s diaries, and from the outset this was meant to be their story, but Elena was without a doubt the main character. Apparently this is hard for people to grasp.
Headcanon: Elena was a party girl before the accident to an extent. She went to bonfires and parties and had a few beers. But after the accident, riddled with self-loathing, she went a little more wild, hanging with Vicki and getting stoned on something most days. Vicki was the only person who didn’t ask her if she was okay. Elena wasn’t sure if that was because Vicki understood being an orphan, in a way, or if Vicki was just too high to care. But she enjoyed it anyway. Until something went wrong, probably Vicki mixing pills and alcohol, and Elena got the shit scared out of her. As she does so well, she shut that part of herself down and dedicated herself to being the person she was before the accident. She didn’t give Vicki an explanation, thinking they were more drug-buddies than actual friends, simply stopped coming over or answering her texts. Her own experiences with drugs and with Vicki are why she is so overprotective about Jeremy in S1. And this is why Vicki seems to dislike her so much.
Heartcanon: Oh my god, so many. I’ll be honest, I am SE trash so a lot of my heartcanons are based around that. But my favorite is a twist on S6. Basically, Elena DOES get her memories of Damon back, but instead of falling back into a relationship with him, the sudden barrage of memories shakes her sense of identity. She begins to wonder how she ended up in such a toxic situation, not just with Damon but with surrounding herself with monsters and death all the time. (I find it REALLY hard to believe that just remembering Damon would make her fall in love with him again. Most of their relationship was fighting and dysfunction, and without the emotional experiences that caused her to gain trust in him, AND THE SIRE BOND, I just think they would have fallen flat.) Deeply shaken, she breaks things off with Damon for good and moves out of VA, maybe to a smaller town in the Pacific Northwest where she still studies medicine and starts writing in her diary again. Bonnie casts a protection spell on her before she leaves, so no one she doesn’t want to know where she is can find her (basically Unplottable). She texts with Bonnie and Caroline constantly, makes lots of new friends, and feels safe and happy. (Also Bonnie gave Stefan the other cure because she knows he wants to be human, and he ends up in a town near where Elena is and they meet maybe 2-3 years down the road…)
Soulcanon: ELENA IS BISEXUAL! SHE LIKES GIRLS AND GUYS! SHE AND REBEKAH TOTALLY HAD SEX DURING THE NO HUMANITY ARC
Crotchcanon: I mean this is sort of canon already but Elena is a natural domme in the bedroom. She switches only for Rebekah or Katherine.
