Mental As Week and being an Artist
It’s ‘Mental As’ week down here in Australia and I wanted to talk about mental health.
This week every topic, from anxiety within writers, to mental health issues for refugees, and even apps to help people with mental health has been discussed. I don’t want to touch on these subjects. They are important. Incredibly important. But I want to touch on something more immediate within my own life. Being an artist.
At the moment I am studying writing at University. It is incredibly stressful. Not because of the work load. Not because I am trying to write while also studying. No, studying writing at uni is like trying to figure out a rubics cube, but your underwater trying to avoid sharks, and there is a Marxist lecturer, a Cultural materialist artist, and a shit tone of books falling on your head. And the rubics cube is a critical framework. If that didn’t make sense then you know my pain. The problem with studying writing at uni is the billion things you need to know and keep track of. There are about a thousand ways to get into the industry, and there are a thousand things you have to know to qualify as an artist. It gets overwhelming. Wondering what your intelligence is, and wondering what other artists intelligence was. Wondering how all this stuff will help you. Wondering when you will learn to get a job in the industry. Wading through all this can be incredibly stressful. As an artist (in any field) you will question what you are supposed to know, what your work means, what your voice is etc. And when that happens it is incredibly easy to lose yourself down a hall of depression. Asking impossible questions and seeking impossible solutions. And to the people in my situation I want to say this: There is help out there. A friend, a family, a hotline. They are there, and will always be there. You are not alone. And... just by taking an artistic pursuit, you are an artist. Never forget that.
