(This came about from this post over on @tyranttortoise‘s blog. Underfell)
It happened fast. And really, you should have known better. Even after all this time, Sans still reacted the same way to panic and uncertainty. Even if it might have been Papyrus who had eventually unlocked the door to the closet. (The Edgelord probably would have been fine since he had grown up in this hellish place.)
But it had been you to open the door. You had actually yelled at Papyrus for the first time (in this run anyway) just before. Locking someone in a small room to get them over claustrophobia never ended well.
“Raven….no…” Sans stumbled towards you; catching your broken, bleeding body. The bones he had used in his panicked attack had gone deep. It was easy to tell by feel that this was fatal.
“Guess….this run…is a bust….” You coughed, nearly laughing at your own stupidity.
“Idiot. You were suppose to talk Grillby into letting me be best man this time.” Sans held you close, mind running a mile a minute to find some way to fix this. You both had lost track of how many times everything just reset. Thirty years on the surface then wham; you were all back under this cursed mountain. It made for a very strange friendship.
“Wasn’t… gunna happen… not again….” You just sag in his arms, resigned to more than just this death. What was the point in doing it again when your family was just ripped from you over and over again. Things were starting to fade at the edges of your vision.
“Don’t you dare give up now, Sweetheart. We got further this time. Your little songbird made it all the way to middle school this time. Remember?” Sans pressed his forehead against yours. He watched your eyes, holding you closer as the beat of your heart slowed. “Don’t give up, please? I can’t do this on my own…” He whispered the words to you, knowing it was safe with you even after this run.
“…try…” It was getting hard to keep your eyes open. Sans just held you tighter. He looked a little panicked but it was hard to think. “… I’ll….”
“See you on the other side, sweetheart.”
