Birds of Prey (2002-2003) Pilot: General Reaction Post
Ah, when the 2000s still had 90s style music.
I can see the influences of Batman Returns and of course, Batman the Animated Series. The noir and silhouettes (particularly one of Barbara and her awesome red hair), the black and white inside-Helena's-head-sequences.It feels familiar. Batman Beyond comes to mind, too. Only instead of the far future with Terry McGuinness, we get Dinah and Helena. We get Oracle instead of Bruce Wayne.
Chills. Because that was definitely Mark Hamill's voice coming out of the Joker.
References to the Killing Joke were tasteful. And I appreciate them focusing on the three women struggling with their identity and how to do good with what they're given.
Alfred was pitch perfect. He was more Alfred from the Animated Series than Michael Caine, but there was instant warmth. I do find it curious he did the intro voice over. I think it's because he's the most tangible, present, connection to Bruce Wayne and Batman besides Barbra.
I like the idea that the city didn't know Batman was their protector, but I also kinda don't buy it? Or did people not notice Catwoman and Batman and the Joker with his hair?.
I'm not up to date with Gotham, but I did watch some of the first season. I see shades of Fish Mooney. I love the idea of Harley still having her secret identity and trying to establish her own chaotic empire.
I was a little thrown by Dinah having touch/future predicting powers.
