Why is mepron/atovaquone so much more expensive with my new insurance 😭😭😭

Desperately need but instead of $10 for three bottles, it’s now ~$400 for one. Brb while I go cry over the ridiculousness that is medical insurance. In the meantime if anyone has tips for getting it cheaper, let me know

My experience with Mepron

Treatment for chronic Lyme sufferers is anywhere from a month to a many years of antibiotics. And not just any antibiotics, the real killers. This stuff is serious poison. Like chemotherapy, it doesn't just kill the bad stuff. 

I started with a month of Doxycycline (used for everything from acne to staph to syphilis), then moved on to 2 months of azithromycin (also known as a “z-pak” that people normally take for no more than 10 days) and mepron (used for malaria). 

Mepron is the bane of my existence. It is so potent that it costs over $1,000 a bottle if insurance doesn’t cover it. It comes in a liquid form. It is literally neon yellow. (don’t believe me? Google image search Mepron.) Each dose made me want to vomit. One time, I did. It was also neon yellow. This drug made me so nauseous that I could barely make it out of bed to get water some days. See, the most glorious part about Lyme is something called a Herxheimer reaction (more commonly known as a “herx”). Basically, this is when antibiotics kill the Lyme spirochetes and your symptoms get worse. As if Lyme isn’t bad enough on its own, treatment only makes matters worse in the short term. Mepron made me Herx so badly that I almost fainted on the daily. My face would twitch uncontrollably, making me drool a hilarious amount (my professors must have thought I was crazy.) I had heart palpitations at night so badly that I barely slept, and when I did, I had the most intense nightmares (I had a recurring dream of being chased by an entire army of orcs from Lord of the Rings…) My body was so shaky that I would have had multiple seizures if it were not for the amazing power of breathing exercises. All I could do was breathe through all of this pain, knowing that the Lyme bacteria were dying. But the drugs were killing me too. I have never felt weaker or so close to death. I realized that my body couldn’t process all those toxins. I thought, there must be a better way! So I threw away my Mepron. I threw away all my prescription drugs. And now I will heal from Lyme and all other illnesses, with only the natural medicine of life.

You know an oral med is GROSS when you choose a suppository over it. Especially when you are already on another suppository. The only day I don't have to use a suppository is sunday. CRAZY. 

But seriously that medicine was like opening the gates of hell in my mouth. And I've had mepron. IT WAS WORSE THAN MEPRON. IT WAS WORSE THAN YELLOW PAINT.

Ruined

Ok so i am really pissed!! N was helping me transfer the last little bit of mepron from my big bottle to the little one i carry in my purse. well he spilled some on my finger, i went to switch hands to get the little bit off my finger. Then WHAM O! dropped the damn bottle!!!! I got mepron everywhere, in my hair, on my shirt, the tank top i was wearing, on the only pair of jeans that fit, on my feet, covered the bathroom in bright yellow. well i went to try to save the outfit, oxiclean and spray and wash. my shirt was covered, i took it back out to rinse it a bit and well the bright yellow mepron turned blood red it was crazy, N took a picture and guess what it looked more yellow in the picture... its so weird. Im so upset about the possible loss of my outfit and the mepron :-( 

But on other news i have been doing better but had to come off the bactrim because nick is allergic and he started to break out in a rash.
