The Quality of Mercy
We are here only because of mercy. Through eons of time so many times things had to go right for life to exist, plant life, animal life, and ultimately our human life. Looking at the roots of our family tree, mercy was required for our ancestors to survive so that we could be born. In light of that, what is the quality of our own mercy? Do we allow it to flow from us to others?
“The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.” —William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice
“Who was a neighbor to the man who was attacked? The lawyer answered: The one who had mercy on him.” —Luke 10:36-37
We are only here because of mercy. The countless little mercies that our ancestors, all the way down to our parents, including what we ourselves have received. Mercies are the tipping points of life. Our own. And others.
