During the mid-season break, we will be putting together some fun bonus content for MERCY, including A Day In The Life series featuring Boomer & Ceely Incorporated. These bonus episodes will be short (aiming for <5 minutes) and be themed around B&C daily life when they aren't in perilous situations.

My very wilful brain decided today was MERCY day, so I was able to make awesome progress on Episode 4!!! It's always such a challenge to write dialogue between Wayne Sawyer and Daisy Gray because they are essentially polar opposites in terms of personality and intelligence type (i.e. High EQ babygirl cowboy vs Low EQ dopamine junkie academic).
Anyway, here's a little excerpt from today's writing session. CW for topics of death and grief.
GRAY: Well, of course, when one imagines death, one often thinks of a cemetery. The headstones, the epitaphs, the sour-grape faces. But haven’t you ever wondered what those of other cultures and creeds imagine when presented with mortality? For example, in some parts of the world, they do sky burials. Instead of burying their dead, they leave the bodies out on mountaintops and allow nature take its course. When they speak of death, do you suppose they think of the sky?
SAWYER: This is just how death is in Mercy. We cry. We get ugly. We say useless, meaningless words, and we bury our dead like a bad secret. And then we–and then we go on about our day like nothin’ ever happened. We just…
(Hesitates, heart stuttering) We just go on.
GRAY: And you are satisfied with this?
SAWYER: I have to be.
GRAY: You don’t, you know. You could make it entirely yours.
SAWYER: (Heavily) That’s the thing, Gray. He weren’t entirely mine.
GRAY (VO): I close my mouth and allow the Reverend’s scripted supplications fill the heavy silence.
When I first saw Wayne Sawyer strung up in that tree, bloodied and deranged, I was certain that he was as beyond this world as I was.
While I am not quite dissuaded from my initial presumptions, moments like these give me pause: wherein he is so steeped in the earth with his heart and his appetites and his offensive humanness.
An angst rises like bitter groundwater – and I’ve the bewildering impulse to tear him away from the sick red dirt of Mercy, Temperance, and the dead man’s unyielding hold.
It would be the happiest of funerals, I think. To be buried in the sky.
