on the boardwalk of the beach you look out and see a mermaid girl floating in the water. she is clinging to a wooden post that holds the pier in place above the water.
she looks hungry, so you drop down some of your fries from your bag. you weren't going to eat them anyway. she collects them as they fall and eats them. she swims away when she’s had enough.
this happens again, same time different day. you find her by her gentle singing. it sounds like another cry for help. you drop down more boardwalk food. you figure she must be desperate to eat, since she’s come back so soon. you're alright with foregoing your lunch just for today.
the third time you go to the boardwalk, you hear her singing again. this time, you decide it might be more polite to just try and go to her directly instead of dropping food on her like an animal. you walk down onto the sand underneath the boardwalk and wait.
she sees you and swims over, just barely staying out of the shallows. you meet her halfway, waist-deep in the ocean water. she sizes you up and presents her hand. you hold out the paper bag with greasy street food to her.
she snatches you by the wrist.
silly human, she was grateful for the snacks, but you were the main course all along.
