one of these days i'll look more into the difference between mermaiding as a hobby and mermaids as a form of alterhumanity.
considering the pure amount of mermaid media that we grew up on and how common "playing mermaids" was, you'd think that we'd have had a more established community at some point in alterhuman history. I've come across spaces for weres, vampires, ghosts, dragons, elfes, fae, and many other common mythological creatures, but never mermaids. The current tumblr communities are the closest I think I've ever seen.
But mermaiding as a hobby? They have cons, they have meetups and forums and groups. They have phenomenal costuming and fins. I really wanna tap into the mind of some hobby mers and see what fits into an alterhuman framework and what doesn't. How common is alterhumanity within those spaces?
Of course I wouldn't want to try and divert their energy into our community or convince them to identify any way, but like. Come on. I find it hard to believe that we're not connected at least a little bit.
