[MIX SERIES]: LVLSRVRYHI-009: Merouac
LVLSRVRYHI: Give an introduction. My names Kai, 28, from Leeds. Noise.
LVLSRVRYHI: What are some of your early influences - what got you into producing? I Started making music when I was real young but found producing through Breakcore and "IDM" when I was about 15/16 - Venetian Snares, Aphex and stuff. Using Soundforge to cut up old punk records, trying to make beats using slices, pretty weird stuff looking back on it. Then picked up Fruityloops, Reason, found Grime/Dubstep... Going to the West Indian center probably helped a lot too.
LVLSRVRYHI: How about people who are influencing you right now - has your taste changed much? Yamaneko, Rabit, Mumdance, Murlo, LTHL... Really loving how "Grime", in my eyes, has opened up to a lot in the last few years. I avoided making 140 for a few years - like a lot of people did I guess - but I’m back and enjoying it.
LVLSRVRYHI: The first time I came across your tunes was when Tony Phorse was going mad about them on twitter and now you're a part of the District Sound fam, how did that come about? I met Tony a year or so ago through mutual friends, a group called The Tomorrow People in Leeds (Out to Gary Krishna!!), swapped music and stuff. I was working on other projects at the time but when I started work on the Merouac stuff at the start of this year I sent him some things over and he was into it. He put me through to Steffan at District who I gave a track 'Frost' for their Artist Comp Vol.3.
LVLSRVRYHI: You also produce under the Kaison moniker - what do you see as the differences between your two aliases and the music you make as them (also what exactly is afkasound)? I’d say Kaison is my gentler side, ha. Slower House/Jazz/Triphop weirdness. After having numerous identity crises during my musical life time, a couple of years ago I chose AFKA (Artist Formally Known As) as my AKA. Sadly, once again, that didn’t really stick and many people already called me Kaison so it seemed wise to use the name people knew me by.
I thought I’d keep the AFKA name as a platform for me to post multiple projects without things getting too confusing with loads of profiles: SC, Bandcamp, Twitter etc. It’s a roof to keep everything under I guess.
LVLSRVRYHI: Favourite dub you've been playing lately? LTHL - Tell Me
LVLSRVRYHI: Is there an older track that you've been reaching for a lot? Kyle Hall - Kaychunk. Not gonna lie, Boy In The Corner has been getting a lot of plays of late too!
LVLSRVRYHI: What have you got coming up next? Maneki Neko EP (District Sound) An EP with Classical Trax’s new venture KENYON_ Plus a couple more things not fully worked out yet. Also the Kaison - Eth Olam EP on Guangzhou Underground came out the start of this week.
LVLSRVRYHI: Anything else you've been listening to that you want to share? Palmbomen II. Best album of the year for me so far.
