Warnings: None? Ismelda being a bit edgy but like... one sentence.
A/N: I really liked the idea I had for this, I’m not sure if I like the development, but I hope this is what you wanted, anon! Anyway I’m insanely proud of cursed cabbage-headed trouble magnet, it’s probably my best insult towards MC so far. (This sounds weird and it is, please don’t judge me, I’m not a MC bully).
It all started in their first year, when they duelled for the first time. Y/N L/N, younger sister of that idiot Jacob who had been expelled from Hogwarts a few years prior, had beat Merula Snyde on the one field she cared the most being first in: magic itself. She got out of the duel sore, and she fell to the ground on the verge of tears.
What she didn’t expect was Y/N crouching down as well, holding her head up.
“Did I hurt you? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. We shouldn’t-”
“Get your hands off me!” Merula cut her off, her voice much louder than Y/N’s, unaccepting of her concern and apology.
She knew she shouldn’t have reacted that way; she had acted out of fear. Why would a person whom you threatened to behead seconds ago be concerned about your wellbeing? Alert! Defense plan! Yell!
That’s when it all started. She continued using her old defense plan - bullying her, teasing her, shouting at her, anything - throughout the years, trying to suppress her very obviously growing feelings towards Y/N. She treated her friends the way a mother should treat her children.
But why did this attract Merula so much?
Even when she was no more than a toddler, she received no attention nor affection whatsoever from her mother, not to mention her father, who was barely ever at home and when he was, she hardly ever saw him. The way Y/N behaved around her friends certainly made them feel loved, and Merula… she craved that kind of love.
She thought, I want her to love me that way too, but then she remembered that she was nothing more than a cursed cabbage-headed trouble magnet, a Mudblood whose brother had been expelled and who was no better than him herself.
So, defense plan.
“Why, hello, L/N. What curse have you unleashed over the school today?”
She saw Y/N’s face falling suddenly as Rowan held her arm gently. Another cute thing about her, her shyness… No, bloody hell. She wasn’t cute. Get your feelings sorted, Snyde.
“Leave her alone, you spoiled prat!” Rowan shouted angrily.
Merula stifled a laugh and was about to respond when she heard Y/N talking to her friend.
“I don’t think it would change anything if you yelled at her, Rowan. Don’t mind her”.
They left. They completely disappeared among the people in the courtyard. Merula let out a breath she had been holding against her will, then realised how quickly her heart was beating.
I have to do something about this.
Her great idea? Anonymous messages.
She started with a few words scribbled on a piece of parchment that she slipped inside her book as they were, once again, paired up in Potions.
Unluckily for her, Y/N was as clumsy as she was gentle and let her book fall as she was trying to put it away at the end of class, and when she retrieved it, the note was left abandoned on the floor.
The oblivious Hufflepuff even stepped on it.
Damn it. I need to do better.
At the following Charms class, Merula decided to sit right behind Y/N. This time, she let the note slip right into her book bag.
Mission accomplished. Hopefully, she’ll find it when she takes her books out.
And she did.
As Y/N emptied her book bag to start her assignments, she saw a crumpled piece of parchment at the bottom. She took it out, receiving a strange look from Rowan.
“What is that?”
Y/N read it quickly, then set it on the table with a laugh.
Madam Pince was already eyeing her funnily.
“A love letter. I suppose it fell into my bag by mistake. It only says: I’m very scared but I think I love you. Please be my girlfriend!”
“You straight-up told her: Please be my girlfriend?”
Liz tried to contain a giggle as Merula told her about the note. The two weren’t friends, but Merula needed advice and Ismelda wasn’t exactly ideal. Liz couldn’t be worse than her.
“I think it would all be easier if you decided to date a Puffskein. I could find you a very affectionate one, if that’s how you like it”.
“Stop mocking me, Lizard!” Merula let her body fall on one of the elegant green sofas of the Common Room, sighing deeply.
“I’m sorry, I’m not very experienced in these matters. Maybe you should be a bit more detailed? Ask her to meet you? I’ve seen how she is. She’ll give you a chance”.
Definitely better than what Ismelda said, Merula thought as she recalled her previous conversation with the girl.
“Ask her out” she’d said, “and if she says no, kill her”.
That girl should stop being so blood-thirsty.
Liz left after a few moments, excusing herself and muttering something about a Murtlap she needed to care for, leaving Merula alone among a few frightened first-years who were panicking over an essay for Snape.
She huffed, thinking about how she could have asked Y/N out, remaining anonymous, and avoiding the note trouble.
The idea struck her like lightning, and she bolted out of the Common Room, hitting one of the first-years who looked at her as if he had just bumped into Kettleburn’s escaped Chimaera.
The next morning, hundreds of owls stormed into the Great Hall with the mail. Y/N didn’t usually receive any letters - her parents weren’t that interested in her after all -, but that morning a red envelope landed in front of her.
“Is that a Howler?” Rowan asked, bewildered as she opened her Daily Prophet.
“Apparently. But I haven’t done anything to deserve one from my parents, and even if I had, they wouldn’t have cared…”
“I suggest you go to the Common Room. I don’t think it would be ideal to open it here” Rowan proposed as Y/N motioned for the envelope. All of a sudden her figure was disappearing behind the heavy doors of the Great Hall, Howler in hand.
After she had made sure no one, not even the anxious students who sometimes skipped breakfast for a cram session, was around the yellow-painted Common Room, Y/N ran to her dorm and locked the door before opening the Howler, which started shouting in a high-pitched voice.
“Y/N L/N! EVER SINCE I MET YOU YOU HAVE MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME NOT TO LOVE YOU! YOUR CARING, ADORABLE SELF CAPTURED ME AND WILL NOT LET ME GO! MY FEELINGS FOR YOU KEEP ME FROM APPROACHING YOU! PLEASE MEET ME ON SATURDAY BEHIND THE THREE BROOMSTICKS, AT 5 P.M.! I LONG TO SPEAK TO YOU! I LOVE YOU, Y/N L/N, AND IT’S KILLING ME!”
Y/N could not recognise the voice, which was probably magically altered. At the words that it shouted, she couldn’t help but chuckle, all the while a blush crept on her cheeks.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a yawn and some messy pink hair emerging from an equally messy bed.
“That was quite the confession” Tonks remarked as she stirred, making Y/N laugh loudly.
It took an army of three four hours to convince Y/N to go to Hogsmeade and discover who sent that Howler.
“What if she dislikes me after she gets to know me better?”
“You’re the cutest person on Earth, Y/N, what could ever go wrong?” Tonks chimed in, her pink hair discolouring as she grew more and more frustrated.
“I freeze up all the time when meeting people, what if that annoys her?”
“It won’t” Rowan assured her.
“What if it’s a trap? Like the letter I got that got me petrified and nearly killed?”
“We’ll be around. Hogsmeade will be full of people on Saturday, no idiot would try to harm you with dozen of witnesses” Penny explained, her calm logic finally soothing Y/N.
“Fine. I’ll go”.
Penny, Tonks, and Rowan cheered, letting out sighs of relief; Tonks’ hair finally turned bright pink again.
After the longest day and a half of their lives, 5 p.m. of Saturday finally arrived.
Y/N was hugging her body clad in a sweater and her large cloak and scarf, fighting the cold and walking thought soft snow. It felt very weird that she had been invited behind The Three Broomsticks, it still felt like a trap, but maybe her admirer was just as shy as she was.
Y/N rounded the corner, taking a deep breath. As she opened her eyes, she saw some very familiar auburn hair and purple eyes peering out from an emerald scarf.
“Merula?!”
“L/N”.
Y/N’s face was stuck in a shocked expression. Merula, of all people?
“You sent that Howler?”
“What’s with that face? Seems like I did. Why else would I be here?”
“Honestly, Merula, I didn’t come here to be mocked as always. Had I known I would have stayed with my friends” Y/N muttered under her breath, starting to walk away.
“No, L/N… Y/N, wait! I meant it”.
The Hufflepuff stopped in her tracks.
“Listen, I know that I treat you like a bag of dung all the time but… I really like you. I didn’t know how to… Ugh, I’m not good with words, okay? But honestly, I rewrote that Howler a thousand times, I was as nervous as ever. But please, give me a chance”.
The last sentence sounded pleading, desperate even. It struck a chord in Y/N’s gentle heart.
“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt”.
Merula’s face broke out into a smile.
It was almost eight o’ clock. Y/N and Merula were among the few still in Hogsmeade.
“I had fun” Y/N said softly after a long silence. The snow had started falling again.
“Me too”.
Silence again.
Merula couldn’t resist anymore - she had been fighting the urge to kiss her all evening, she just wanted to give in. Her nose and cheeks red from the cold, her kind eyes, her messy hair, it was all so bloody adorable.
So she did, she gave in. Just a quick peck, that left them both cherry red, more than before.
Y/N was frozen in place.
Merula couldn’t help but take that reaction as a rejection, and muttering an apology she stormed off.
You went too far, she scolded herself, you don’t kiss your sworn enemy on the first date.
Suddenly, she heard quick steps in the snow, and turned to see Y/N running towards her.
“What is it?” Merula spat venomously.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. You just…”
“You’d never want me that way. What’s a Slytherin doing with a Hufflepuff, anyway?”
“No, I-”
“A Pureblood with a Muggleborn? My parents would kill me”.
“You just-”
“I shouldn’t have done this”.
“LET ME SPEAK!”
Merula was stunned by Y/N’s sudden outburst. Her eyes were fixed on the young Slytherin as she let out a heavy breath, then spoke.
“You just took me by surprise. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible”.
Y/N leaned in, and it was her pecking Merula’s lips this time.
“So you’ll be my girlfriend?” she asked timidly.
“Why not”.
They exchanged a smile, and suddenly it wasn’t so cold after all.
