You can't tell me this wasn't Gwaine and Arthur trying to one up each other to seem like the better and stronger man in front of Merlin. Trying to claim they're each the one responsible for saving them all (mostly Merlin) from being killed? Literally standing toe to toe? Arthur is upset that Merlin trusts Gwaine like he trusts Arthur? They're absolutely competing for Merlin's affections.

fascinating of them to make Gwaine part of the Great Tragedy again at the very end. Arthur dies slowly in Merlin's arms and Merlin is left to walk the earth waiting on him but Gwaine died in their absence. and you just know that hurt because Merlin was the first person that Gwaine was ever really attached to and Arthur repealed his father's judgement to give Gwaine a home. that last episode is absolutely about Arthur dying with Merlin but to me it's also about Gwaine dying without. about Merlin losing arguably his closest friend and not even being there to know it until he'd already lost the love of his life. Magic, Strength, and Courage reinforced at the very End, when Strength gives out and Courage can't hold on any longer and Magic has to continue on alone because Magic has always been and will always be
