Nidhogg was (and still is) a cult indie sword-fighting game from 2014. Its bizarreness can easily be described with a GIF:
It goes even more back, to 2011 when it was the IGF winner of the Nuovo Award (yes, the weird one). Well deserved.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t pay enough attention to it to understand it, until this year at Dan Fessler’s post-GDC pixel art party where people were playing it on the big screen (Dan is a cunning swashbuckler himself). Seeing some of the high-level play really made it shine, with people throwing blades at each other, picking them up at the last moment and turning the tide around three times before you finished a sip of your drink.
It was fencing at its finest.

Not just does it provide another layer of meaning to the endless carnage a single round employs, but it also provides a sort of reset to the events as a whole. Rather than ending on the opponent’s loss, instead the focus is on the “winner” still being eaten alive.
