SINCE WE ARE IN SAD TOWN

Lightning after the crash. He gets rebuilt, it takes two weeks of hammering and replacing an sanding and torching, all custom. He returns home. Says something briefly to the press, smiles weakly. He's so glad it's over. Now he can go back to normal. He finds himself at the butte. He sits in the middle, underneath the ornament. Driving all the way out there made him so tired. Sally or mater visit him to say hi, bring him dinner. He's so tired, he dozes off- 4am, he wakes with a gasp. He had dreamt of fire and smoke, could feel himself still airborne. "That's weird," he says to himself. But no matter how hard he tries, he can't fall back asleep. He falls into a haze. Every day he thinks, "oh, I'll be better today." As he doesn't eat or sleep, wavering on his tires, spooking away from anything to his right. Sometimes, when he blinks he sees sparks and concrete at night. Everyone worries, they don't know what's wrong or how to help. No amount of love soothes him. Then he sees a calendar. It's been three weeks. Almost four. It's been six since the wreck. He's still not better. He calls Mack. "Saddle up, we're heading to the racing center today." "Why, boss?" "I think... I think someone there can help me. I need to get back to the Piston Cup. I need to do something to start. This is the start." "Whatever you say, bucko."
