I think they were talking about how blunt and obvious it was, not the fact that it was there. there were some other comments discussing the apparent “subtlety” of older episodes but whatever

Well, there’s a lot of debate in the fandom about that. Canon in the book says he never had a girlfriend (which we fanfiction writers gleefully seize for our own fell purposes), but according to Travis Beacham (the movie’s writer), that by no means suggests Chuck was a virgin. *grin*

So he hasn’t dated, but he has very likely enjoyed, if not a jaeger pilot’s celebrity, then definitely the spoils of victory.
