The Ultimate Cosmic Road Trip: How Long to Jupiter?
Ever just lie awake at 3 AM thinking about how terrifyingly massive space is? Yeah, me too.
I was re-watching 2001: A Space Odyssey the other night, and it sent me down an absolute rabbit hole. We casually say Jupiter is 628 million kilometers away, but human brains literally aren't wired to process numbers that big. So, I sat down and did the math to translate that cosmic void into everyday, human travel.
Spoiler alert: It gave me major existential dread.
If you hopped in your car right now and drove at a steady 100 km/h (62 mph), it would take you 716 years to reach Jupiter. You wouldn't be taking a road trip; you’d be launching a multi-generational colony ship made of a Toyota Civic.
Even if you took a commercial Boeing 747, you're looking at 80 solid years of flying. (Though honestly, as a bald guy, at least I wouldn't have to worry about getting a haircut during that 8-decade flight!)

This sheer, crushing scale is exactly why I am so obsessed with tech and virtual environments. We can't wait 80 years to explore our solar system. We are pushing the boundaries of technology so that one day, you won't need a spaceship—you'll just need a headset to stand on the edge of the Great Red Spot.
