Meteor Hits House In New Jersey
Aware Over eons the metal meandered To the surface it found its way Until earth no longer covered it And it saw the light of day. A meteorite struck the ground It hit the metal head on And with this act of serendipity Any normalcy had gone. It was mined sympathetically And forged in a factory Making the components of a robot That were strangely complementary. Once assembled it was stored In a packing crate so tight Until it was struck by lightning On the stroke of midnight. The robot was then self-aware Knowing it’s name was Zed Visions of life without masters Capering through his head. He wriggled from the packing crate Jump starting an old car Setting sail for the horizon He knew it wasn’t far. In front of a dusty tail He drove off into the day Determined to lead a free existence And free he could stay. I like to think he’s happy In destiny I can trust That he’s found a lubricated landscape That is free from rust. Never tell me that not one star of all That slip from heaven at night and softly fall Has been picked up with stones to build a wall. Some laborer found one faded and stone-cold, And saving that its weight suggested gold And tugged it from his first too certain hold, He noticed nothing in it to remark. He was not used to handling stars thrown dark And lifeless from an interrupted arc. He dragged it through the plowed ground at a pace But faintly reminiscent of the race Of jostling rock in interstellar space. It went for building stone, and I, as though Commanded in a dream, forever go To right the wrong that this should have been so. Yet ask where else it could have gone as well, I do not know—I cannot stop to tell: He might have left it lying where it fell. From following walls I never lift my eye, Except at night to places in the sky Where showers of charted meteors let fly. from ‘Star in a Stone-boat’, Robert Frost

The rim of Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater from the floor near the start of the ascent. Interesting fact: the floor of the crater is about 30m below the plain outside the rim. Look closely and you can see two people half way up the climb track. Also look closely and you can see a white model airplane in the sky, controlled by one of the people on the rim. At the time (2012) I thought ??? but now I wonder if it was an early photo drone. Food for thought. The Kimberleys, WA.
