43 years ago (ack!) I was a crew member of the Heddy, a two masted Baltic Trader planning to sail from Puerto Vallarta to the Galapagos. Beside making photographs I was a rigger and repaired the lines of the foremast. I met Gary Sawade when I boarded the Heddy, at anchor in the harbor at Puerto Vallarta, and we became friends as we sailed to Manzanillo. I haven’t spoken to him since leaving Mexico in 1976, and as I had made dozens of photographs of him, and he was to write the story of our adventure, I decided to search for him online and we could share our memories. I love the stories revealed by a contact sheet. There are the individual images, but it is the process leading up to and away from what I saw that is like reviewing a reality movie; the steps replaying visual memory.
