For @mezno cause rude people got them down. I'll be using the twins' English names as that's what we generally use when talking together! It's also my first time writing them so I'm still working on their voices (need more train puns and references obviously).
Title: That Missing Piece Word count: 732
Ingo hadn't quite regained ALL of his memories when they returned home from his unexpected derailment to Hisui. The first thing to return was the rest of the man that surrounded the smile he never forgot. The overwhelming joy of simply being in Emmet's presence. The fact that the man knew him like no one else did, and shared his interests and eccentricities. There were little things, of course, that he didn't quite remember yet, but there was something he was fairly certain about.
He was pretty sure that Emmet hadn't watched him like a braviary or followed him everywhere before he'd been shunted off the tracks. It wasn't as though he minded... It was just...
"Emmet..." They were passing a convenience store that Emmet said they always visited on their way home. The light glowing from inside cast large shadows as he abruptly stopped walking.
His twin crisply halted next to him, completely synced up to his movements. Warmth spread through his body at how familiar it was, and it reminded him how much he missed it back in Hisui. He ached for something that he couldn't quite remember yet.
"Hm? What is it?"
"Are you... worried about something?"
The smile on his precious twin's mouth faltered the faintest amount; it was unlikely anyone else would have noticed. "Hmmmm, no, I don't think so!" Completely unconvincing. "Maybe I'm just sleepy! We worked verrrry hard today, after all!" He knew how hard they had worked; Emmet had never once let him out of his sight. Even at their desks, managing the paperwork throughout the day, any time he'd glance up, Emmet was staring at him. As though looking away would allow something to happen.
He hummed in response, dropping it for the rest of the walk home. Emmet's light voice filled the silence of their trek with laughter and proclamations over various bakeries and cafés he wanted to try now that Ingo was back.
Upon arriving home, Emmet declared as they removed their coats and hats that he would be in charge of making dinner, and that Ingo should wait on the couch. He did as Emmet asked, loosening his tie as he did so. But he saw the hesitation before Emmet stepped into the kitchen.
So, his feeling had been right. The watchfulness Emmet had over him - it was definitely not their normal.
".... Emmet, come here." Instead of sitting down, he stretched out on their couch, patting the space in front of him. Just enough space for Emmet to lay down next to him. Emmet was in the space almost immediately, instantly entangling their legs and wrapping his arms around him. Placing a hand on the back of his twin's head, he pulled Emmet in closer, allowing him to tuck his face into the crook of his neck.
"You're here, right? It's not another dream?" Emmet's words were muffled, breath hot against his throat. There was a waver there, a wetness of tears threatening to fall, and he pressed a kiss to Emmet's temple without even thinking about it. A few more soft kisses at his temple and cheek had the waver in Emmet's voice change to a quiet laugh, though it still sounded watery.
Emmet's grip tightened as he waited for Ingo's answer.
It was hard to decide what to say; if he repeated something the dreams had said, would it make Emmet believe it was another dream? If he said something preposterous, that would lead to the same outcome. Gears turned, and Emmet's hold started to vibrate slightly at his silence.
"Emmet, we are the perfect two-car train, are we not? You could tell if I wasn't really here." As Emmet seemed to relax at his answer, he shifted himself down so that they were forehead to forehead, and he could finally look in Emmet's eyes again. "Right?"
Emmet sniffled but the smile in his eyes was undeniable. "I was so lonely." Despite being surrounded by people in Hisui, he'd felt incredibly lonely as well. Even outside of his lost memories, the ache of loneliness had hung heavy in his chest. "I love you, Ingo." It was whispered, soft, and all he'd wanted to hear for so long.
"I love you too, Emmet."
Amidst soft kisses and whispered words of affection, they fell asleep in each other's arms, finally able to relax after so long.
