Mega Man X headcanon: The "I'm not a robot" captcha was changed to "I'm not a Maverick" in 21XX because robot civilians had already become commonplace in that era. In other words, Sigma is banned from using the internet.
Well, SOMEBODY had to do it eventually...
Horror games, then (2000-2010) and now (2017)
Protagonists in horror games then: Interesting, relatable characters that had names and personalities of their own and were unique and stood out. Protagonists now: Generic, self-insert character with no name, non-existent personality or even a canonical appearance. Expect them to be a silent protagonist.
Monsters in horror games then: Deformed, grotesque monsters, demons, and sometimes aliens that were all really freaky and terrifying, and in some cases were manifestations of fear itself. Monsters now: Incredibly mundane thing (usually based on something intended for children) that is now Evil™ for some reason (pizza animatronics, toys, classic cartoon characters, etc.).
Characters in horror games then: An ensemble cast of diverse characters, both allies and enemies, ranging from other survivors, evil cults, evil corporations, demons, monsters, etc. Characters now: Only one asides from the monsters, being the player. If there is another character, expect them to be killed off, usually off-screen.
Settings in horror games then: Numerous maps that include diverse settings such as abandoned buildings, cities, fields, forests, caves, etc. Anything to make you feel like you’re not alone in a desolate area. Settings now: Only 2-3 maps at best, often indoors, limited mobility.
Gameplay in horror games then: 30-50 hours of playtime, lots of content, many things to do, many places to go, memorable story, puzzles, strategy, etc. Gameplay now: Can be completed in only 2-3 hours, requires no strategy at all, very boring and repetitive gameplay that gets old quickly (and somehow people find this fun), forgettable story, puzzles are simple, and no strategy.
Horror of the horror games then: Shocking, disturbing, unnerving, has blood and gore, worthy to have that big ol' "Rated M for Mature" label on the box, and enough to give you nightmares. Horror now: Jump scares, the most cheap and pathetic way to scare someone EVER! Practically safe... TOO safe...
