My favorite thing about the Mission Impossible movies is that they craft this wonderful story across these 8 films and 30 years about loyalty and love and the power of faith in those you care about, but they didn’t decide to start doing that until like movie four
So you have this decision to make the fourth film about the cost of the job and the grief that haunts the narrative established in the third film, so you hire the same actors from the third as well as some new ones, build a crew around this new central theme and now you’ve connected three and four and then you build on this to make movies five, six, and seven. And then in the eighth film you do a very elegant and artful tie back to the first so you have now completed this narrative circle of loss and growth and love, and it’s really very beautiful
Except MI 2 which is just out here with absolutely NOTHING to do with the rest and it cracks me up
