I work in education and I know that school can be a tough environment. Is there anything in general that teachers or paras can do in their classrooms that can help make students with autism feel more comfortable, or something that jumps out as something that shouldn't be done (I know sometimes people think they are helping but they aren't)?
AH. I’m sorry for not getting to you sooner I was planning on making a list but they are highly subjective and everyone has different opinions. If they can tell you ask them what they don’t like that might help. Generally I don’t like when teachers raise their voice at all or make eye contact for too long. (the list goes on). Also stimming is a wonderful thing and it is stressful and upsetting when someone isn't allowed to. But all issues vary per person. What one student might strongly dislike one might need in order to feel comfortable. I’ll post a thing on our page asking this question so you can get more answers besides ones that pertain to me. I hope this helps! ~Love, Mod Gwen
