Reading Diary.
- The Education of a Comics Artist. Edited by Michael Dooley & Steven Heller.
An anthology of essays, interviews, and selected comic book pages about comic books, from more than sixty contributors. Arranged as a series of lectures, covers topics as varied as editorial cartoons, political comic strips, alternative Comix, European and Asian comics, comics’ relationship to other arts such as graffiti, graphical design, and illustration. And many, many more!!
As comprehensive a guide as one could hope, allowing for a truly wild variety of voices and ideologies. Personal highlights include Paul Krassner and Robert Fiore separately reflecting on censorship and pushing the envelope in comics; Heidi MacDonald giving us a guide to navigate Comic Conventions from the business side; Bill Griffith and Nicole Hollander sharing trivia about their respective groundbreaking comic strips (“Zippy the pinhead” and “Sylvia”); Trina Robbins analyzing the rise of romance comics and their subtle influence on later independent comics. And much more!!
Not only educative, but quite thought-provoking. Definitely recommended.
life's not about expecting, hoping & wishing, it's about doing, being & becoming. It's about the choices you've just made, & the ones you're about to make, it's about the things you choose to say - today. It's about what you're gonna do after you finish reading this
"Now That Your Dollar Bills Have Sprouted Wings" by Michael Dooley Michael gives "Dollar Bills" his solo acoustic arrangement, even starts to sing it with a little country twang which seems to be popular on this song. Otherwise this little tale of despair and loneliness and loss of money has really grown on me; felt a little gimmicky at first, but it's grown away from that for sure. artist: Michael Dooley Youtube
"Eyes That Say 'I Love You'" by Michael Dooley Sometimes I really look forward to the straight acoustic guitar covers; in the beginning there were quite a few, but they seem to have been overtaken by everyone taking the tracks up a notch. But I am glad to still hear these, they're refreshing, and feel pure and Michael here has done a few that are some of my favorite folk Song Reader versions. artist: Michael Dooley Youtube
"Do We? We Do" by Michael Dooley Michael has given us 3-4 covers previously, and adds a calm laidback take of "Do We?" to his collection. UPDATE: Michael dropped another cover of "Do We" a few weeks later, and it's the opposite of calm and laidback. He uses electric guitar, and it's a much more dynamic performance. Both are terrific! artist: Michael Dooley Youtube Soundcloud
"We All Wear Cloaks" by Michael Dooley Michael goes with a really short take on "Cloaks," though I liked his guitar on this, and that it feels slightly aggressive. Seems to work for this song, in a way. artist: Michael Dooley Youtube Bandcamp
"I'm Down" by Michael Dooley A couple of months back, Michael gave us a version of "Don't Act," and returns this week with a couple of new covers. I'll start with his "I'm Down," where he does a pure folk arrangement. Thanks for the songs man! artist: Michael Dooley Youtube Bandcamp
