It is official. We are now at war. The university is not suspending classes, but is encouraging anyone able to enlist to fight on the front lines. I cannot, in good conscience, continue to study while the country is in such danger... and I believe my dear father, if he were still with us, would want me to take action. A strange sort of calm has come over me - I am to undergo a medical exam first thing in the morning, and if all is suitable, I will be away to fight for king and country.
My hard work this year has paid off! Adam, Michael and I went to join our fellow students at Pepper’s for a celebration. It is such a relief to be able to blow off steam after such a troubling time - yet still, I find myself excited to start my final term.
Exams are approaching fast at Britechester. Cups of tea sit forgotten on desks, and often the only sound in the house is the quiet turning of pages and the plinking of Adam’s piano records. I feel I spend more time in the library than in my own bed, now. Ms Turner has been fretting and delivering us food - including a lovely raspberry pie which was much appreciated.
As it turns out, Michael is of the other persuasion - a confirmed bachelor, if you will. I’m touched he considers me such a confidant, to be frank, although I was terribly awkward. (I am not much of a reveler, and everybody seemed to be drinking and kissing an awful lot. What is one supposed to do with oneself in these situations?) The fellows were perfectly welcoming to me, though, despite a little justified suspicion at first, and we had a nice evening. Michael was right - I needed to break out of my rut. I’m glad he invited me.
Michael seems to think I am working too hard - he approached me during my evening study and asked if I would like to join the gentleman’s club he is a member of for drinks tonight. I admit, I could do with a rest, so I agreed. At the pub, he led me downstairs to the function room in the basement - pausing outside the entrance with a sudden seriousness on his face. He said he is only allowing me here because he trusts me terribly, and implored me not to mention the gathering to Adam; which of course I agreed to although I found it awfully strange.
It has been some time since I last wrote. Fred always called me a mummies boy, and I suppose he was right - I miss her terribly. Michael, to his credit, has done his best to comfort me, but I cannot expect he and Adam to put their lives on hold. I have been throwing myself into my studies in anticipation of the upcoming school year. It is exhausting, but I can only hope that it will pay off and I will be able to make my late mother proud.
Term has begun at Britechester, and the hard work has begun with it. I spend most of my time poring over my studies in the library or at home, but I’m glad to have the company of my fellow lodgers and law students while I embark on this journey. I must say, there are more women in the law department than I expected - I am taking care not to say anything that could be interpreted as amourous, as I’ve been told it is terribly bad form...
