biblically accurate hmc redraws!
i was rereading the book so why not! i have a couple more doodles but i’ll post them all together later. not too happy with how Sophie turned out, but i also wanted her to look plain compared to michael and howl…
a redraw of these i did a year ago:
'Howl's Moving Castle' by Diana Wynne Jones illustrated by Emily Altman
Sometimes a family is you, the badass you pulled by being pathetic, your ex-situationship-turned-grandma, the kid who hangs out at your house, the fire demon who’s infatuated with your badass girl, and the dog you stole from your old magic school teacher
“Busy old fool, unruly Sophie,” said Howl. “Am I right in thinking that you turned my doorknob black-side-down and stuck your long nose out through it?” “Just my finger,” Sophie said with dignity.
“There were horrendous, dramatic, violent quantities of green slime—oodles of it. It covered Howl completely. It draped his head and shoulders in sticky dollops, heaping on his knees and hands, trickling in glops down his legs, and dripping off the stool in sticky strands. It was in oozing ponds and crawling pools over most of the floor. Long fingers of it had crept into the hearth. It smelled vile.
“Save me!” Calcifer cried in a hoarse whisper. He was down to two desperately flickering small flames. “This stuff is going to put me out!”
Sophie held up her skirt and marched as near Howl as she could get—which was not very near. “Stop it!” she said. “Stop it at once! You are behaving just like a baby!”
straight friend groups be like: *blonde girl* *chad* *the funny one* *kyle* *brunette girl* *frat boy*
gay friend groups be like: *repressed teenager in the body of an old woman* *anxious kid* *loser wizard trying to avoid government employment* *grumpy ancient demonic entity* *dog frankensteined from the bodies of gay lovers*
Currently obsessing over Howl's Moving Castle and I just love the characters??? Especially in the book.
Howl: "I don't like arguing."
Also Howl: literally marries the one person who always draws him into arguments
And then there's
Sophie: "I'm content living a boring life."
Also Sophie: literally marries an isekai protagonist
The two of them arguing is just so. Romance. The fact that Howl fell in love with a ninety-year-old woman? Peak. Like, yeah, he suspected who she was, but he still fell for her while she was ninety. Something about a man who always looked at people for their beauty suddenly falling in love with someone's personality. I love that trope, but especially here, where Sophie's personality includes a being nosy, cleaning too much, messing up his spaces, and managing to ruin his suits. Twice over. He fell in love with that.
That's just. Amazing? And it's written very well. The movie is just breathtaking and the book is just perfect. No notes. Everything is wonderful. Especially:
Howl screaming so loud the entire town hears it and worries it's a bad omen.
Sophie basically cursing hats and clothes.
Sophie and Howl and the poor spiders.
Michael's "Is he dead?"
Howl shrinking into a tinier cat to look more pathetic.
Sophie throwing weed killer at him.
Howl: "You have to leave because you're scaring Sophie. And also me."
Calcifer and his little fire arms.
The dog who is very joyful about Howl's presumed death.
"Normally I would never bite a fellow countryman."
WELSH RUGBY
If you haven't read the book, you're doing yourself a disservice. It's really quite entertaining.
