You know what to expect when it comes to a film by Michael Haneke. It’s going to be slow, methodical, and downright unsettling. Children in film are usually creepy but having them set in pre-WWI Germany AND possibly have them start murdering townsfolk doesn’t make it easier. Haneke has stated this film is not suppose to be a message on how a generation of children were influenced for WWII. I can see why he says that because that makes this film a bit too on the nose. But then again the shit these kids go through with their parents, whether deliberate or not, makes it hard not to see how strict parenting could make children in Germany a bit more hateful. I really like this movie though for having some incredible shots and being downright creepy at times. It makes me glad I don’t live in a universe by Michael Haneke because no matter where it takes place you best know nothing good comes for you at the end.
