Michael Slager, the white former police officer who was filmed killing an unarmed black man in North Charleston, S.C., has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. In sentencing Slager, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to a federal civil rights violation, the judge ruled Thursday that he committed second-degree murder and obstruction of justice.

Slager, 36, "acted out of malice and and forethought, shooting dead an unarmed and fleeing Walter Scott," U.S. District Judge David Norton told the court Thursday after several days of testimony, according to the Charleston Post and Courier. "Slager's actions were disproportional to Scott's misconduct."

At the time of the shooting, Scott was only the latest black man to be killed in a series of controversial officer-involved shootings that prompted "Black Lives Matter" protests and vigils.

Michael Slager, the former South Carolina police officer who shot and killed Walter Scott, was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in federal prison, a decision the Scott family said gave it a "sense of justice."

"This is an historic day for civil rights, in particular for officer-involved shootings," said Chris Stewart, one of the Scott family's attorneys, at a press conference following the sentencing.

Former South Carolina police officer, Michael Slager, was sentenced on Thursday 12/7 to 20 years in federal prison for shooting and killing Walter Scott in April of 2015. Slager stopped Scott for having a broken taillight, and Scott ran because he had unpaid child support. Slager preceded to shoot Scott five times in the back. Slager then approached Scott and dropped his taser near him, which prosecutors believed was an attempt to plant evidence on Scott to mislead the justice system. • Scott's family has expressed forgiveness to Slager several times. But they all agree that they are glad to see the officer held accountable. • This is historic for civil rights, particularly in the case of officer-involved shootings.
