Dunkin' Donuts - Fred the Baker "Time to make the donuts" commercial (1981)
Happy Donut Day!
In the 1990's, one of my first jobs was as a counselor at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. I have heard this time period referred to as the 'Golden Age' of Space Camp. Judging by the number of campers going through during the summer months I could not argue.
One summer was so busy the teams were broken up into two staggered shifts. The first shift got up an hour earlier than the second. I am a morning person by nature but it was an ungodly hour to get the kids up and ready for the day. I tip my hat to 'real' parents for enduring this time-honored torture. Being a morning person, I did not think twice about others who may have enjoyed sleeping in. As I went into the sleeping bays, I would turn on the lights and announce a little too loudly and a little too enthusiastically, "Good morning campers. Time to get up...time to make the donuts!!"
In the 1990's, Dunkin' Donuts had a spokesperson named 'Fred the Baker' who spoke for a generation of people who had to get up regardless and begin their work. It seemed appropriate for my circumstances at Camp. The campers, however, greeted it mostly with moans of derision. As the weeks progressed, comments began to show up in the evaluations:
-'I don't like the Donut Man!'
-'Make the Donut Man go away!'
-'I liked everything about Camp BUT the Donut Man!'
My retirement as the Donut Man of Space Camp occurred late in the summer when a group of campers bribed another counselor to inact 'revenge' on the dreaded donut man! I was not told what this revenge would be--only to beware! The next morning I was EXTREMELY cautious as I entered the sleep bays. What doom awaited me? They're only kids how bad could it be? Oh, but those who have worked with children know they are a creative lot!
I carefully opened the first door...turned on the lights...'time to make the donuts, gentlemen'...usual grumbling response. Second sleep bay the same. Third bay, as I pushed the door open, I heard a scraping sound behind the door. I located a flashlight in my backpack and made no announcement to keep the upper hand. As I scanned the floor, my light made contact with a cellophane wrapped object. I could make out a paper note attached. I picked it up CAREFULLY and retreated to the light of the hallway.
The note read, "We already made the donuts...let us SLEEP!!!" The note was attached to a small package of vending machine donettes. Not true donuts, mind you, but the note made an impact. From that day on the Donut Man was a bit kinder and he laughs to this day about a group of very creative young men. I am sure they went on to achieve great things possessing thinking skills like that!
A belated apology to all those campers whose sleep I disrupted and to Michael Vale (the real donut man/Fred the Baker) who passed away in 2005.
In studio artwork documentation for Michael Vale, 2022.
