Visiting the Sick by Michael Sweerts, Museum of the Netherlands

Helpful visitors enter the home of a poor family to minister to the sick. Seated next to a bed, a doctor points his finger upward, as though to say that only God holds man’s fate in his hands. Standing by the side of an old woman is a child, who gazes imploringly at the viewer.

Clothing the Naked by Michael Sweerts, Museum of the Netherlands

By having one of the figures look out of the painting at the viewer, Sweerts enhances the poignancy of ‘clothing the naked’. The brightly lit shoulder of the man at the centre of the composition emphasizes his nakedness, giving the painting a sense of immediacy.

Refreshing the Thirsty by Michael Sweerts, Museum of the Netherlands

Sweerts painted his series of the ‘Seven Works of Mercy’ on different kinds of linen. For this painting, he used rather coarse canvas; accordingly, his brushstrokes are broader. Visible in the background of this scene is the church of Santissima Trinità dei Monti in Rome, an allusion to the necessity – then as now – of helping the needy and offering refreshment to the thirsty.

Card Players by Michael Sweerts, Museum of the Netherlands

Michael Sweerts (1618 - 1664). De kaartspelers, ca. 1648 - 1650. Twee sjofel geklede mannen zitten op straat te kaarten. Helder wit lichten de kaarten op. Intussen wordt er achter hen gevochten en ook buiten beeld vindt iets plaats dat de aandacht van het spel afleidt. Op hetzelfde moment wordt de man in het blauw gerold. Hij merkt er niets van, alleen de kijker ziet het gebeuren - erop geattendeerd door het boefje. Wat op het eerste gezicht een doodgewoon Romeins straattafereel lijkt, blijkt een diepere betekenis te hebben. Als tegenhanger van het Schildersatelier dat mogelijk voor de IJver staat, zou dit stel nietsnutten de Luiheid kunnen verbeelden. De verstilde sfeer en dramatische belichting geven de schilderijen iets raadselachtigs. Dit is kenmerkend voor het werk van Sweerts. Aankoop 1901.
