The Cult: Sonic Temple (1989)

The Cult’s fascinating, oft-confusing, ever-evolving career trajectory reached its commercial, if not necessarily its critical, peak 30 years ago today, with the release of 1989’s Sonic Temple.

From day one, The Cult had kept everyone guessing, as they relentlessly transitioned from the post-punk/goth/new wave smorgasbord of ‘84’s Dreamtime, through the sparkling nouveau psychedelia of ‘85’s Love, to the hippie, roughneck, denim-clad hard rock of ‘87’s Electric.

But now that the brass ring of mainstream stardom was at last within their reach, singer Ian Astbury, guitarist Billy Duffy, bassist Jamie Stewart, and whoever was temporarily warming their drum stool (*) weren’t about to chase their muse down some exotic rabbit hole on Sonic Temple.

Instead, they hired rising studio star Bob Rock (who’d engineered mega-platinum smashes like Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet and Aerosmith’s Permanent Vacation under producer Bruce Fairbairn) to polish new cuts like “Sun King,” “Sweet Soul Sister” and “Soul Asylum” into arena-packing gems.

Sonic Temple also gave Cult fans their pick of punchy, Duffy-driven rockers like “New York City” and “Automatic Blues,” or trippy Astbury anthems like “Wake Up Time for Freedom,” “American Horse” and “Soldier Blue,” some of which satisfied his Native American spirituality fetish, to boot.

But it was the all-important singles: the bombastic “Fire Woman” (which bulldozed up the charts in numerous countries) and its partly-acoustic follow-up “Edie (Ciao Baby)” (inspired by Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick) that solidified The Cult’s arrival, both in America (where it peaked at No. 10) and abroad. 

Unfortunately, as I explained in this anniversary piece for Ultimate Classic Rock, the long and tortuous road that had brought the Cult such widespread acceptance was bound to claim its bounty ...

Beyond the inevitable credibility loss among hip fans, who saw Sonic Temple as nothing more, nothing less, than a hair metal sellout, the ensuing, year-long, globe-trotting tour led founding bassist Curry to resign, leaving just Duffy and Astbury to steer The Cult’s legacy thereafter.

And, though they’ve enjoyed many creative highs in the decades since, the duo has never quite replicated their best-selling album’s success -- possibly because they’ve gone back to keeping listeners guessing instead of answering all of their questions as only Sonic Temple could do.

* Get a load of this: after firing Electric-period drummer Les Warner, The Cult rehearsed with ex-Honeymoon Suite player Chris Taylor, cut demos with Eric Singer (Badlands, Kiss, etc.), recorded with Mickey Curry (Hall & Oates, Bryan Adams) and finally toured with future Guns n’ Roses man Matt Sorum.
