i think it’s important that “people with higher than average incomes could and should be doing more to help out the proles” and “doctors/lawyers/engineers are not the source of poverty and wealth inequality” are ideas that coexist in your head.

somebody who makes six figures could probably, realistically, and easily, fund an entire gofundme campaign for surgery or paying back rent or getting out of medical debt or what have you. a few thousand dollars a year is not the end of the world to them.

BUT☝️ they are not the arbiters of the economy. they don’t own your apartment building, they don’t command billion dollar corporations who pay minimum wage and price gouge on groceries, they don’t set the price of electricity or water or telecom, and ultimately they do not decide whether you live or die. those are billionaire things. those are generational wealth things. those are 50 million dollar salary offshore tax account buy a small island nation things.

“parent’s rights” are bad because systematically stripping someone of their autonomy and forcing them into obeisance under the threat of violence is cruel when we do it to adults - i don’t think it’s a stretch to say it’s much moreso to do it to kids.

when you’re five and still forming ideas of how the world works and what relationships look like and your place in the grand scheme of things, to be told that you *have* to do something or *cant* do something solely because someone else wills it or forbids it, that creates an implicit precedent that there are people you should uncritically obey for reasons that may or may not become clear later.

that primes you for abuse. that primes you to be mistreated. because if someone, be they a romantic partner or a job or an institution of government, can tap into that precedent and hold the reigns of authority that have been controlling you since you could walk upright, you will obey them without thinking twice, and even if you do think twice you are less likely to fight back because of it.

important to note that while supporting small, local business is a good harm reduction strategy when compared to buying from huge megacorps, it’s still consumption through the capitalist mode of production. you’re still supporting the capitalist class, and you’re still incentivizing excess production as a means of personal gain.

this is not a personal moral failing, no ethical consumption under capitalism and all. but it is to point out that pro-small-biz rhetoric is an important piece of liberal ideology.

the liberal “the big boot isn’t a problem because we can make lots of smaller boots instead. you could even be a boot.”

versus the marxist “nobody should be stepping on anybody.”

interesting (read: horrifying) how a state of being disabled will absolutely just kill you in the capitalist system. it can be a permanent disability, of course, and that’s something most people can understand and recognize, but it can be a transient temporary state of being disabled and it can still be more than enough to set you on a downward spiral that ends in homelessness or death.

i’ve got adhd, which can luckily mostly be managed with a few simple strategies and a stimulant or two. granted there are systemic barriers between you and those stimulants but once they’re crossed life gets simpler. but all it’d take is a loss of access and a particularly bad month and i could lose my job.

when the ability to live is tied so directly to the ability to work, the punishment for not working very simply becomes death.

what is “proper english” and why is it better than “improper english”?

who is typically associated with “improper english”? who is typically associated with “proper english”?

what are the differences between these two groups that might lead to one being considered “more correct” than the other?

with regard to “improper english” or “slang,” is there some variety that is considered more acceptable than most? inversely, is there some variety disliked more than most?

we’ll only ever be free if we’re all free, ya know. the people who oppress us are powerful enough to cause huge problems for any individual group of common people who break their chains on a local level. they will always find a way to undermine whatever power we gain on the small scale, and they’ll always do everything they can to ensure those successes are contained and those ideas and tactics don’t spread. they work very hard to undermine the solidarity of the working class and the small folk.

the people who benefit from the systems above us as they exist today will fight very hard to make sure that nothing happens to upset the status quo. as long as they have power, they will fight to keep it. they’ll continue to rig the game in their favor.

that’s why you can’t change the rules by playing the game as it’s set out before you. thats why the rules don’t change. because the people on top make sure of it. and even if it seems like they do, the system itself is built to ensure that things stay the same.

if things are to change meaningfully, they must be changed completely. we cannot use the current systems to make that change happen, and we cannot allow any part of that system to remain. otherwise, things will slowly be pushed back to the way they are today.
