a couple of Crusader Bugs (Mictis profana) seen foraging amongst the weeds and grasses. these robust bugs are named for the pale-coloured saltire (diagonal cross) along their back.
being a True Bug (order Hemiptera) M. profana posesses a proboscis, which is used to pierce and drink sap from various native and exotic plants. the photo above shows a good view of this relatively short appendage, unfolded to feed on a plant stem.
