Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Ándale! Toro, Ándale! That's probably what the matador bug would sound like, if it could speak. But the bright red 'flags' on its hind legs aren't for charging bulls- scientists believe that waving their flags instead helps to deter potential predators like preying mantises, either by warning them that the matador bug is highly toxic; the colors and motion may also confuse predators into leaving the bugs alone.

Saw this not so little guy at Rueda Verde, Ecuador. This October. Any ideas? Was it unwise to get this close?
YOU WILL DIE IN 3 DAYS!!!

Its not potentially harmful like the kissing bugs.
even when they're not as goofy as the ones on this Enoplops scapha, hemipteran antennae are always so charming when they do the floppy dog ears thing. so expressive, if the expression you want to convey is "sad"

A really cool true bug that was pointed out to me while out on a ranch! This guy looked really cool, and I really really like his little eyes. I think the coolest thing about him is the fact that the entomologist with us, who has a TON of field experience, said he didn't quite recognize the bug. It's cool to find something that a knowledgeable person can point to and say, "Ah! I recognize that!" But it's also cool to find something that somebody doesn't recognize and get to figure out what it is! In my case, "figuring it out" is simply uploading it to iNat.
