It’s a perfectly logical explanation, actually. Joey just doesn’t want to hear it. He doesn’t want to believe that there is no mythical KAI, guru of all arcade machines, waiting to be dethroned l.

“It’s totally just one guy.”

Joey’s face is on fire. His whole body feels like it’s on fire, as he shouts across the parking lot at the little bastards trying to pick a fight.

The slur they shouted at him still feels like it’s hanging in midair, echoing so loudly in his mind that he can’t hear his worried friends tryng to talk him down, can’t feel the anxious hands trying to tug him away. Usually, he can ignore things like that, but tonight, after a rough day at school, rough day at home, rough day having to live with himself...it’s just too much.

“You piece of shit! Say it the fuck again and see what happens!”

So, it's settled. First thing in the morning, it’s on to Florida, to the museum the Professor mentioned.

The huddle around the kitchenette table breaks up, and Joey --

This week, Yuugi’s been trying to get Joey into a string game, cat’s cradle. He’s at his desk, trying to pick knots out of the string and free his trapped writing hand.

“Hm? Battle City? Boy, lemme tell you about it. I still get the creeps when there’s an electrical storm, and that’s just the tip of that iceberg.”

“Ya know, at the time I thought you were on the fire squad or somethin’ so I didn’t really question it when ya just showed up. I know that’s dumb, ‘cause I’m pretty sure you were even in your uniform. But I can admit, I was panicking.”

Joey tilts his head. “I don’t remember, did you compete in the first round, or were you just there to spectate with Téa and Tristan?”

[swiftmaidensmoonchild] “They’re right, you know.” Selena giggles, turning a bit red herself. “And I will throw hands if you argue with me about it!”

Joey sits on his desk.

“Step right up, folks, if you got obligatory chocolates you didn’t want! For the measly price of one obligatory chocolate, I’ll sing you a song!”

He strums his ukulele.

“Uh...”
