Singleton Residence | Richard Neutra

Bel Air, Los Angeles, CA | United States | 1959

The Fifties and early Sixties formed a period of great creativity and productivity for Richard Neutra. The majority of his residential commissions of this time were in California, whose temperate climate allowed him to perfect buildings that were closely connected to the landscape. Neutra tailored each house to his clients’ needs, aiming to create homes that were not only ergonomic, practical and engaging but could also improve well-being and make a better way of living. The Singleton House in Bel Air sits on an enticing site by Mulholland Drive. From this elevated positions, the views are extraordinary - taking in the city in one direction but also offering an open vista towards the San Gabriel Mountains. The home was commissioned by engineer-turned-industrialist and rancher Henry Singleton and his family; later, they also commissioned a house by Wallace Neff. Neutra’s single-level house capitalizes on the views - particulary, those of the mountains. The processional approach was engaging in itself, with a long series of steps leading up to the front entrance sitting under a pergola. Water pools around the main living spaces add another dimension - especially when the sliding glass walls retract and reflect the sky. Later, the house was renovated and updated by the late Vidal Sassoon and his wife Ronnie.

Eye for an Eichler: Tour a Renovated Eichler Getaway in California - Home

It’s important to have inspirations when renovating a home, and Jim Cross and Dave Pearson brought several inspirations in tow when they purchased this Eichler getaway located in Orange, California. For years, the couple couldn’t get enough of their weekend getaways at California’s Parker Palm Springs Hotel. They were drawn to the cheerful, kaleidoscopic interiors designed by Jonathan Adler—not to mention the many mid century homes that the city is known for.

Miller House | Eero Saarinen

Columbus, Indiana | United States | 1957

Architect Eero Saarinen developed a long association with the small city of Columbus. In the early Forties, Saarinen’s father Eliel designed the First Christian Church there; other commissions followed on for his son during the Fifties, including the Irwin Union Bank (1954) and the North Christian Church (1964). Most of these projects were connected - one way ore another - with Joseph Irwin Miller and his family, who became key patrons and friends to Eero Saarinen. Miller - president of the Irwin Union Bank, and a pivotal figure in the city - turned to Saarinen with a request for a new family home in the modern style. This substantial dwelling of 750 square metres (8,000 square feet) is arranged on one level with an overhanging roof (supported by sixteen steel columns) spanning the entire building and also sheltering a series of verandas. Four internal pavilions sit in each corner - closed to the interior but open to the gardens - holding the master suite, children`s bedrooms, kitchen and other ancillary spaces. The spacious hub of the house is its living area, completed with a central conversation pit. With interiors by Alexander Girard and landscaping by Dan Kiley, it is the most cohesive and rounded of Saarinen’s residential projects.
