Daphne House | Craig Ellwood
Hillsborough, CA | United States | 1961
The Daphne house is a substantial family home, situated just south of San Francisco. It partially overlooks a golf course, lending it a leafier context than one might expect, and the single-storey dwelling is able to spread outwithin its garden setting. Here, Ellwood and his associate Jerrold Lomax lifted the steel-framed house gently above the ground, imbuing it with a significant degree of lightness. The house is essentially H-shaped in plan and arranged around a central courtyard that holds the swimming pool and adjoining terraces. The pool, which is partially protected by a pergola, becomes a kind of „outdoor-room“ in itself - a pivotal point that many of the key living spaces look across as reflections of the water spill through the house.
