Math Joke:
What's going on in math class for you guys?
In which I am temporarily ahead
My classroom is completely ready to go other than a single piece of furniture, which needs to be delivered, removed from its box, and placed in its appointed location. I still don’t have any goddamn textbooks or anything like that, mind you, but the room is ready. I’ll probably go in tomorrow anyway just to see what kind of trouble I can get myself into. In the “good news/bad news” department,…

I am a teacher who has some students who speak spanish as their first language. They're having a hard time remembering the steps to divide fractions - Keep, Change, Flip - which I suspect might be a bit of a language issue of not remembering what the words mean without context.
Does anyone have a better mnemonic for dividing fractions for spanish speakers?
So I resigned.
Put in my resignation for teaching.
Had to.
Most of my kids are lovely. They really are. But I’ve been overwhelmed and stressed and reading back over my journal... that started before this group of kids, before this year. I’m not a bad teacher, but it’s draining me so badly that I have to get out while there’s still enough left of me that I can recover.
The last straw was being asked to cover a class of 70+ of my students from last year, on top of improvising a lesson plan to continue to try to teach a class with half a dozen students who’ve said they’re trying to make me suffer, on top of trying to teach my other two classes that are fine, on top of contacting even more parents, on top of preparing for meetings, on top of lesson planning, on top of...
Yeah.
I had a panic attack and was sent home for the rest of the week by my very concerned administration. We told the kids I’m sick, which is true enough. I’ve felt sick. I’ll go back next week, I guess, and the week after that, as I’m able... but then I’m out. Not coming back in 2023. I cannot do all of the things an effective teacher is expected to do.
I don’t have a job lined up, though I’m hopeful about a few I’ve applied for. It’s terrifying but staying would be much worse.
man, my dad really took the 'see not hear' old saying really literally. because like when he used to teach me (grade 7 with eyes full of innocence but still would water way too quickly) math (literally pre-calculus ish?? like wtf dad) in middle school, i would read a question and we would 'do it together' but like. i would get the answer maybe a minute in if it was an easy one, and dear old dad thought i was dumb as shit and 'explained' the whole thing through (really just thinking out loud but super detailed) even after i said the answer out loud. not helped by the fact that im super quiet but still. and the answer, when he got to it, almost always after me? lo and behold. my heckin answer.
middle school me had SUCH a right to be stewing in anger for like three minutes straight, fuming silently, internally thinking of stabbing my mechanical pencil either through my hand or through my dad it really didn't matter but somehow at this age, with that experience, i STILL cant have hulknuttering anger whenever i need it to stop me from bawling.
