watchhowisoar reblogged your photoset “midknightwriter: jedi-sith-scoundrel: I love you. I know. #I CAN’T HELP IT BETHANY #I DO...”
#no but see #he turned star trek into a star wars movie #which means he can make a star wars movie
Theoretically, yes...but he also seemed to fundamentally misunderstand what Star Trek was about? So I’m not counting on anything until I actually see the movie. It’ll be less disappointing that way if it’s messed up. :-)
specialagenthowyoudoin replied to your post:Yes...
No problem! Btw, do you happen to know of where I can find some good SG1 fics? I’ve read all of the quality ones on FF, but I don’t want to start reading any XF fics yet because I’m only in season seven and I don’t want to spoil myself
I don’t know, sorry. :(
I’ve mostly stayed on FF.net. I’ll tag some other people in the fandom to see if they can help.
There’s also this blog, which updates with S/J fics from AO3.
Why did you choose your URL?
My first URL was actually puddlejumpinggal. But Team Sheppard inadvertently inspired me to change to something more creative. Plus, I have a major crush on John Sheppard. And he also flies puddle jumpers. Heck, he even named them. So basically my URL is about being John Sheppard's subspace wormhole surfing spaceship submersible.
What’s your middle name?
Gail. Short for Abigail. I kind of want to get it legally changed to that.
If you could own a fairytale/fictional pet what would it be?
Pegasus. Or maybe a Phoenix.
Favourite colour?
Blue
Favourite song?
You want me to pick?
What are your top 3 fandoms?
Stargate, Once Upon a Time, Sleepy Hollow.
Why do you enjoy tumblr?
It keeps me in contact with the Stargate fandom mostly. That's really why I joined. I found that there were some Stargate blogs on here and had to join. I also wanted to keep up with what was going on with the Sherlock fandom. But Stargate is first in my heart. I may have grown up a Trekkie thanks to my dad, but Stargate was mine. I miss it so much. I love my Stargate family.
I was tagged by midknightwriter, and then samantha-carter-is-my-muse tagged me too, which made me remember that I had the first set of questions in my drafts already. And then reflectingiridescent tagged me too, right before I was ready to hit publish. So I'm combining the two three tags into one post so I only have to write one set of questions, haha!
Always post the rules.
Answer the questions that the person who tagged you asked and write 11 new ones.
Tag 11 people.
First, Donna's list:
Dogs, cats, both or neither?
I love cats and dogs. I grew up with a dog and cats, and if we weren't a military family that moved every couple of years and normally lives in rentals (it's hard enough to find rentals that allow cats; ones that allow dogs are even rarer), we would have both. But at heart I'm a cat person. Cats are my favorite animal.
If you could be a deity for a day, who would it be and what would you do?
I would be the Goddess of Parking Spaces and I would grant good parking to everyone who was running late, has small kids, has temporary limited mobility. It's a small enough thing that I don't think I could possibly be corrupted by too much power, but it's the kind of small thing that can really make someone's day easier.
Two things on your bucket list?
I'd love to learn to play guitar someday. And, uh...I don't know. I always have a hard time with this one. I tend to not make long-term plans in anything more than a very vague kind of way, because when you're married to a military officer, half the time the plans you make get screwed up anyway. So I've learned over the years to live in the moment as much as possible. There are other small things I'd like to do but I don't know that I would consider them bucket-list items, per se. Like, before we leave Japan, I'd love to see the aquarium in Osaka that has the whale sharks (the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan), and visit a cat cafe somewhere. I'd like to go back to England someday for a visit not on a poor-student budget. I'd love to visit Russia, especially Saint Petersburg. But at the same time I won't be crushed if none of those things happen, because I've lived an incredibly blessed and privileged life, and mostly what I really want to do, I manage to do it.
Who would you choose to be stuck on a desert island with? (Fictional or non)
My husband and kids. My husband is laid-back and calm and extremely good in a crisis and he's also one of the funniest people I know. And I never get sick of spending time with him.
What is your idea of a perfect romantic gesture?
Cleaning my house from top to bottom for me, or paying someone else to do it. Folding my laundry. Brushing my hair or giving me a shoulder and neck rub while we watch TV. Giving me hours of uninterrupted time to myself. Going out of your way to help someone you know I'm worried about. Cheerfully helping me do something that I want done but have trouble doing by myself, like organizing or hanging Christmas lights. Remembering my coffee order.
If you could relive one day of your life which one would it be?
On New Year's Day 2010, I was living in San Diego, and my mom and two very good friends were visiting, and we got Starbucks and went to the beach with Annalie and my friend's daughter and splashed in the water and saw the most AMAZING sunset. It was a great way to bring in the new year. I wouldn't mind having that day to live again. (I've had many other amazing days. That was just the first one to come to mind.)
If you had time what two things would you like to learn to do?
Oh, I kinda answered this already in the bucket list question. I'd love to learn to play guitar, which is really just a matter of getting a guitar and making the time to do it, but I've wanted to do that since I was about 5 and it hasn't happened yet, so who knows. And I'd maybe like to learn to knit...maybe? Sometimes I really want to do this, and other times I think, Eh, screw it, I already know how to crochet and that's so much easier. And if I ever really want something knitted, I can bat my eyelashes at wwjend or zebrabelly and ask them to knit it for me. ;-)
What is the best thing you ever purchased?
Uh. These are hard questions! Best in what sense!? Most useful? Gives the most hours of enjoyment? Most significant? Most helpful to the world? I'll go with the first two things I thought of, I guess: (1) an electric lice-zapper comb thing. A couple of years ago my older daughter had lice and we did the whole shampoo/check for nits thing three times in a row and still hadn't eliminated the problem, so we caved and bought this gimmicky-seeming comb on someone's advice and IT WORKED LIKE MAGIC. And it didn't involve any stinky shampoo. It's more expensive up front--about $30 vs. $10 for the shampoo--but so much easier and more efficient at actually getting rid of lice. And (2) in 2001 I splurged on a KitchenAid stand mixer when I found a great deal on one at Nebraska Furniture Mart. I had always loved to bake but owning that thing was a revelation. I own a bigger model now and I love it a ridiculous amount.
What is your favorite snack?
It depends on what I'm hungry for, but...dill pickles, avocado with chips or crackers, BBQ potato chips, crisp apples, cucumbers seeded and lightly salted.
Have you ever met anyone famous, who and where?
Sort of. If you’re talking athletes…I went to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and was in a small philosophy class with Johnny Rodgers, a famous Nebraska football player who won the 1972 Heisman Trophy, which is awarded to the most outstanding college football player in the U.S. He played professional football in Montreal and San Diego before injuries led to his early retirement. He’s still considered one of the greatest football players ever. At the time I knew him, he was a nontraditional student, returning to school 20 years after he graduated. I had no idea who he was till I was walking across campus with a friend, and crossed paths with Johnny who greeted me by name. I said hello back to him, and turned to my friend to see that his jaw had dropped. He said, “Do you know who that was!?” I said yeah, it was Johnny from my philosophy class. My friend looked at my like I was nuts and said, “That was Johnny fucking Rodgers.”
New York Times-bestselling author Rainbow Rowell is a good friend of mine. (We went to the same high school and university, and grew up in the same neighborhood.) She’s an awesome person, and a really talented, hard-working author, and I’m so proud of her success because she completely deserves it.
What country would you like to visit?
Well, I definitely plan to go back to Australia more than once, because one of my best friends lives there, and a bunch of other friends I want to meet in person! I'd love to visit Canada, specifically Ottawa (we lived there from 1999-2001, and haven't been back for a visit in way too long) and Vancouver (one of my favorite cities in the world) and Regina (a good friend lives there). I've never been to Russia and I'd love to go there at least once, especially since I spent four years studying Russian.
Next, Annette's list:
Which artist, dead or alive, would you prefer painted your portrait?
Norman Rockwell. I think he's one of the most underrated artists.
If you could play any instrument for a day, which would it be?
Well, I do play several instruments: piano, flute, violin, and I sing. I guess if there was an instrument I could only play for a day, I'd like to try drums.
Who is your all time favorite fictional villain?
Hmm. I don't generally like villains; I just want them to go away and stop bothering the good guys, and/or to die horribly, depending on the villain. The first two to come to mind that I don't hate aren't exactly villains; they're more like antagonists with ambiguous motives. Scorpius from Farscape, and Q from Star Trek.
What story are you currently reading?
I'm beta-reading a friend's manuscript. Also I'm re-reading lexiedunne Superheroes Anonymous, which is fantastic. (But be warned, it has a cliffhanger ending because there's a second book coming.) And I've been devouring all the good Jeff/Annie Community fanfic I can find, especially hello-wright-or-wrong's.
Why did you join tumblr?
Because my friend Rainbow told me to. I didn't really do much with it for a while, and then I watched Stargate SG1 for the first time and thought, hmm, I wonder if there are any Stargate blogs?
If you could change one thing in your life, which would it be?
Are we talking realistically? Or imaginatively? Realistically, I would move back to San Diego. Imaginatively, I would wish teleporters into existence for me and all my far-flung friends and family.
If you could bring back an extinct animal species, which would it be?
The thylacine, AKA the Tasmanian wolf.
How do you think you would react if you met a friendly alien?
I think I'd be excited and incredulous.
What was the last thing you bought online?
I don't know exactly. Probably a book or a Christmas present.
At what time do you usually go to bed?
Theoretically? Midnight. In practice? 2am. :-\
Do you believe in love at first sight?
No. I believe in infatuation or attraction at first sight, but love takes time and knowledge.
Annnnnd Kylee's questions!
Who was your role model growing up?
Other than my mom, probably my cousin Tressa. She's eight years older than I am, and the closest thing I had to a sister. Thanks to life circumstances we're not as close as we used to be, but I'd still do anything for her, no questions asked, and love to hang out with her when I get the chance.
What are you passionate about?
As you pointed out to me once, Kylee, I am passionate about food and cooking, and teaching people that making food from scratch really isn't as hard as they think, and so worth the effort! Making sure people know that they don't have to put up with people who manipulate them and belittle them and treat them like crap. DOWN WITH EMOTIONAL ABUSE. Also, books, TV, movies, fanfiction. STORIES ARE SO IMPORTANT.
Talk about a unique tradition your family has.
When I was growing up, we almost always went to see a movie on Christmas afternoon. If there was a Star Trek movie out, we'd go see that one. (I come from a family of geeks.) Since I've been married, our New Year's Eve tradition is root beer floats.
Do you like your middle name? (Do you even have a middle name?)
It's Ann, and it's all right. I don't especially love or hate it, it's just there.
Name a cause really close to your heart.
Education about mental illness. Several people in my family have bipolar disorder, and several of my best friends deal with depression.
What’s one goal you have for yourself this year?
Get back in the habit of working out regularly. I feel SO MUCH BETTER, physically yes but mostly emotionally--calmer, saner, more even-keeled, better able to handle challenges--when I do. Moving always messes with my exercise habits, and I'm still not back in the groove. I need to get there, because I think it's the main thing that's going to keep me sane in a couple of months when Troy is gone for weeks at a time.
What’s a quirky pet peeve you have?
Um...oh, I don't like overhead lights? Is that quirky? I'd much rather be in a room that's lit only by a couple of lamps than by a bright overhead light. Or better yet, only fairy lights. (I admit, it helps that I have excellent eyesight.)
Favorite dessert?
I have a pretty major sweet tooth, and I love lots of desserts, but...my favorite is probably these really really ridiculously good apricot cookies I usually make at Christmastime. I actually have the dough and filling in the fridge, waiting for me to feel better enough to bake a few dozen cookies. I think that day might be tomorrow.
On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being most sassy), how sassy are you? If your online sass level differs from your sass level IRL, you may average the two numbers or report both. XD
I'm terrible at answering questions like this about myself. I dunno, I guess my sass level, both online and IRL, is probably about 6 or 7 most of the time, a little higher or lower depending on the situation and whom I'm with. I do know that my 10yo daughter said to me and my husband recently, "I wish I was Japanese because then I wouldn't have to put up with all this sarcasm from my parents!" (It's hilarious if you know that the Japanese don't do sarcasm.)
Do you believe in ghosts?
No.
How do you take your coffee? (Do you drink coffee?)
Hahahaha. Yes, I do drink coffee--lots of coffee. I'm not quite Lorelei Gilmore or Daniel Jackson, but I do love coffee and probably have at least 2-3 cups per day. I usually drink it with almond milk and 1-2 teaspoons of turbinado sugar. I actually prefer milk in my coffee to cream, but I'll drink it with cream or nondairy creamer or coconut milk or whatever's around. If I have to I'll drink it black, but why would I want to?
My questions:
1. Favorite superhero? Why?
2. Do you remember the first thing you learned to cook? Who taught you? If you don't know how to cook, would you like to learn?
3. What kinds of arts and/or crafts do you enjoy?
4. Favorite weather? Why?
5. If someone gave you a gift certificate to a day spa, what would you use it for? (Massage, facial, pedicure, manicure, haircut, something else?)
6. Favorite Muppet? Why?
7. Can you think of a book you read as a kid, and then again later in life, and understood more or liked better, or liked less? What book, and why?
8. Name your current top three songs for singing along with.
9. If I offered you fruit, a cookie, a piece of cake, a slice of pie, or an ice cream cone, which one would you pick? Assume they're all your favorite kinds/flavors.
10. Do you know your personality type? What is it?
11. Rollercoasters, yes or no? Why?
I tag: secretallie, blackmelange, fooferah, tulipsandtesseracts, nicoeatsbooks, caitlinfaith, chevronlocked, jenndoesnotcare, lieutenant-matt, bethanysworld, megpat2000...and anyone who wants to play along.
If I mentioned you anywhere in this post, you should consider yourself tagged too--including Donna, Annette, and Kylee, if you want to answer my questions. But you should only play along if you want to, no pressure. Sometimes I tag people who never do these kind of memes, I know. I don't have any expectations, honest. I just want you to know I'm curious about you. :-)
