Summer Solstice
The summer Solstice is today, June 21st. Actually, it was at 4:24AM this morning. Here in the DC area, this longest day of the year stretches almost fifteen hours between sunrise and sunset. While it marks the official start of summer, I always feel a touch of sadness as well. A wistful emotion that is silly, and yet… (more…)

[EN] I managed to see the Midsummer Night spectacle in Węgorzewo for the second time. And that took three tries — last time I came with the kids, but it rained so hard we went back home before anything even started. This time, I came with the whole family and… we went back again. But at least the kids are now old enough to stay with Grandma, so my wife and I were able to go once more — just the two of us.
And it was worth it. The performance with over 70 dancers circling a bonfire was truly impressive. Visually stunning, atmospheric, and very well choreographed. There was real magic in it. But sadly — the entire event had a weaker, much less enjoyable side.
First — the space setup. In 2022 there was a stage, performances, stands, life. This year — the field was roped off, artists performed in the center... and 3/4 of the audience watched their backs or side profiles. If you didn’t arrive early and wait hours by the rope, your chances for a decent view were slim.
Second — the technical break. Officially: thirty minutes. Subjectively: an eternity. And all it would have taken was someone with a mic and a plan to fill the gap. The audience just stood there, nothing was happening, though there was no reason that time couldn’t be used. It was a missed opportunity to say something, engage the crowd, prepare them for what was coming. Wasted.
And finally — the sound. The gear was awful. The speakers cracked with every bass beat, killing the effort of young, often very talented performers. Such a shame. The main performance just barely survived — perhaps because the music didn’t hit the full range of disaster. But overall? It hurts. Such a beautiful initiative, but no proper support. And sadly — this isn’t the first time in Węgorzewo that something great gets botched by poor organization. I shouldn’t be surprised. And yet… I am. And a little sad.
A wystarczyłby człowiek z mikrofonem i pomysłem, by zagospodarować ten czas. Zmarnowana.
I wreszcie – dźwięk. Boli. Tak piękna inicjatywa, a bez odpowiedniego wsparcia. I niestety – to nie pierwszy raz, gdy w Węgorzewie coś fajnego zostaje zarżnięte organizacyjnie. Nie powinienem się dziwić. A jednak… dziwię się. I trochę smucę.
midsummer
the birds at night are more quiet now
probably too busy as they have to look
after their youngsters
the trees are already thirsty now that
the skies never shed tears just like
last year
yet, flowers are abundant and pretty
as ever and nature as a whole looks
satisfied and spoilt
midsummer
we are literally bathing in light
and falling asleep has to wait till well
after midnight
even then it is difficult because the night
looks like twilight but i refuse to draw
the curtains: the panorama i see from
my window is just breathtaking
midsummernight
I am waiting for a short visit by my
friend the moon
that will make the night complete
