One of those forever WIPs - started it in 2018 and never finished it. It was supposed to be full page of ninjas. In the sketch (not pictured) Gaara, Konan and Sukea were up next to be added. Well there's still something to like here, so I'm freeing it haha
Maito Dai Headcanons, Part 3
The first time Dai ever made a serious plea to become a ninja was when he was 13 years old. He had been training for over a year and thought he had been making great strides, and presented himself to Tobirama, the 2nd Hokage, who was not impressed at all.
Tobirama had been through wars, lost his younger brothers, and helped his oldest and recently departed brother, who had recently died, establish the village. He could see that Dai not only had what was akin to a disability since he could not mold chakra, but also was not talented in taijutsu either.
Dai wasn't overly intelligent, was not cut throat or cruel, in fact, Tobirama saw Dai as soft. Honest. Loud. Showy. Emotional. A liability. A man that would have died if he had been born in his time. Dai exemplified everything a ninja was not supposed to be. He took Dai's pleas to entering the academy as an insult towarfs him and gave the teen a scolding and hateful lecture that Dai would never forget, before tossing him from the building and telling him to essentially give up on his dreams. Tobirama banned Dai from ever going near the ninja academy again, and went as far as to give explicit orders to the staff to throw Dai out if they ever saw him near the gates again, with as much excessive force as neccessary to get it through the boys head that he wasn't welcome.
Word spread fast of the encounter and Dai was humiliated and bullied for his dreams. People would insult him in the streets for what he pleaded, and he would be pushed around and hit for angering the hokage as well as stepping out of turn. His family unfortunately, were also targeted and mocked for their son's insolence, and his father heavily berated Dai for embarrassing their family. He threw out all of Dai'a weapons and training gear that he had collected. Burning them in front of the boy before deciding to overwork him to keep the boy busy and away from his shinobi obsessed fallacies. He tried to overwhelme Dai with chores and work orders, in hopes his son would forget his dream and become a proper carpenter that he was born to be. From 6am to when he went to bed, he refused to give Dai a moments rest until he collapsed.
It was a low point for young teen Dai... however...his spirit wasn't broken. He may have lost his direct way of becoming a ninja, and he was suffering the consequences of accidentally insulting the Hokage... but Konoha was filled with woods and trees. And Dai had a new plan.
In the early hours, before the sun, and more importantly, his fatger would rise, Dai found the best time to train. Around 3am while his family slept and three hours before he had to officially start his chores, Dai would make his way into the forest. He found a small clearing far from prying eyes, where he made his own private training ground. In the twilight hours before the sun rose, he would work on his taijutsu, and it was there he made first set of prototype weights. Ones that were subtle, but heavy. He could hide under his clothes so no one could see, and would carry 200 pounds on his person at all times, allowing him to work out for long hours without anyone being any the wiser.
Dai may have been shut down. He may have been embarrassed and humiliated... but he was no quitter, and one way or another, he swore that he would train every day, and prove to the Hokage, that he could be the type of man who could be a ninja. Even with Taijutsu alone. One day he would be the Cunning, strong, intelligent, hard working, and fortified shinobi Tobirama expected. And he would prove it through his efforts alone, that hard work could be just as valuable as being a genius.
He just needed more time...
gai always talks about youth and how it is not over yet because his father taught him that and gave him the hope to never give up.
how his self-rules that have been passed onto lee are also because of gai's dad.
i am so emotional for this duo, someone please make the tears stop.
