Where the breeze leads us

Chapter 1: It will take some time

Word count: about 850 words

Author’s notes: this is a series of tiny one-shots taking place in the Sonic future AU described in my fic How You Look In The Wind. You might want to read a bit of it first! There might not be a strict chronology to these events, so some of them are up to interpretation. Enjoy the read!

The dirt path leading to the shack was surprisingly well-kept. Some portions of it were neatly bordered by stones, and wooden bridges jumped across any small ravine or stream it would encounter.

Muttering curses about the idiot who decided to build a house that high up the mountain, the hedgehog kept walking. There was no food left in his rucksack and the night was approaching. No time to waste.

“Can’t believe I’m doing this crap.” he sighed, looking at the small paper resting in his palm.

After some more climbing, he reached a large plateau filled with tall grass and the occasional lone tree. In the distance was a small stone cottage surrounded by vegetation. Smoke was forming little nebulous shapes above it, before dissipating into the cold mountain air.

Which meant he was home.

Scourge rubbed his forehead and grunted. It was still time to go back and forget about this stupid idea...

Before he could regret his choice, the hedgehog sprinted up to the wooden door and knocked twice. A low and soft voice echoed on the other side, awakening the slightest sense of familiarity in the hedgehog’s mind.

“Just a second!”

The green mobian bit his lip impatiently and took a look around. There were crops and vegetables all around the place, a small annex with a large stone device visible inside, and —to Scourge’s surprise— a hefty amount of flowers.

How come there’s so many in the middle of fall?

That thought was quickly cut by the metallic clunk of a lock being pushed. The door opened to reveal the solidly built figure of an armadillo.

“Hey there.” Scourge said in a —hopefully— casual tone. Blue eyes met blue eyes, Mighty staying silent for a moment and taking a long glance at the unsuspected visitor.

“Hello Scourge. Long time no see?” the red mobian offered with an unsure expression.

The two kept looking at each other for a few awkward seconds before Mighty took a step back and opened the door further.

“Do you… want to come in? I have some tea if you want. – Sure, whatever.” the hedgehog replied, swiftly joining the other in the warmth of the house.

“Uhm, take a seat then, I’ll put some water to heat.” Mighty offered as he pointed to a small wooden table with three chairs sitting around it.

While the armadillo disappeared in what Scourge assumed was the kitchen, he took a moment to examine his surroundings.

The interior of the cottage was made of stone walls and large wooden beams maintaining a hefty roof. Clay pots and suspended iron rails were holding a few plants here and there, while a large rug led into another room.

Near the table was a brick fireplace, its heart crackling to the lazy rhythm of flames. Scourge moved his chair closer to it as he realised how cold he was from his journey.

“So, what brings you here?” his host asked. Scourge reported his attention to the mobian, who placed crude ceramic cups and a large teapot in front of him. He took a deep breath.

“Someone sent me here. To you, I mean. – And why is that?” Mighty wondered before sitting next to the fire. “Don’t want to give details, but...” the hedgehog tapped his fingers against his cup, “for a long time I kept doing some terrible shit. Like I used to when we first met, y’know.”

The armadillo nodded cautiously. The Scourge he knew was a power-craving criminal with a certain taste for cruelty and revenge.

“I thought that was the way I was meant to live, but it turned out bland and senseless.” the visitor continued. “So I traveled alone for a while, tryin’ to find purpose or something. Along the way I met a mobian who said he used to be your apprentice, and told me I could use...”

Scourge grimaced as he said the words. “...I could use your help.”

Mighty pondered this for a moment, observing the hedgehog who used to be one of Mobius’ deadliest enemies. He then proceeded to pour tea into the two cups, a small smile appearing on his muzzle.

“Hey, did you hear me or what?” Scourge asked with an irritated voice.

The armadillo didn’t answer, gesturing to the tea before taking a slow sip of his drink. The hedgehog tightened his fists, annoyance building inside him already. He looked at his cup and huffed.

When the two were done with the beverage, accompanied by the gentle roaring of the chimney, Mighty got up and pointed at the kitchen behind him.

“Do you want something to eat before sleeping?” he asked in his characteristic gentle tone. Scourge didn’t answer right away, surprised by the implications of this sentence and how casual his host was about it.

“Y-yeah, I guess. Haven’t eaten much today.” The red mobian smiled and put a hand on the hedgehog’s shoulder.

“Better be in a good shape. Do you know how to use a scythe?” Mighty asked. “What the fuck are you talking about.” Scourge replied bluntly, taken aback.

The armadillo laughed and turned towards the kitchen, gesturing to follow him.

“Well, we’re waking up early tomorrow!”

Mighty Monday

MIGHTY MONDAY

van! (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) Release!

Today we have the pleasure of releasing a music video to our comedy song van!

We are extremely excited to finally share one of our recent collaborations and our biggest yet! 

As a band, we’ve spent a lot of time hauling equipment, and I think most musicians can identify with the troubles of carting load of junk. A dependable ride is paramount. So, we wrote a song to honor every band’s most steadfast friend, the van!

van! is a song off our resent comedy ep with the same name, for download HERE. Recorded by Kyle Houpt at Russian Recording, van! features Nick Huster and Jake Ryan on the songwriting front, with Kyle on bass and an appearance from Diederik van Wassenaer on strings, both long time collaborators and good friends of ours.

After the track was captured, we set to work organizing a music video. Michael Wissig brought the video gear (and a ton of excitement), we procured a local band-van courtesy of Nicholas Harley and Jerome of The Psychics, and 22 folks in all participated in the shoot!

So, a very special thanks goes out to Kelsey Hahn, Michael Wissig, Kevin Romanak, Rubia Hagans, Jimmy Goddard, Diederik van Wassenaer, Lexie Signor, Diane McConnel, Helen Hayworth, Taylor Wood, Kim Wherry, Amanda Goddard, Carolyn Goddard, Melia Palacal, Barbara DeLarm, Amrit Singh, Archie Silapiruti, Julian Hashi, Justin Wolverton, and Curtis Williams. You guys killed it!!

This project involved so many of our friends and album collaborators, and we were honored to have them on board, quite literally. Diederik van Wassenaer (w/ the baseball jersey and violin) arranged strings on the album, and Lexie Signor (in the paintball mask) brought the brass. So cool to have them in the video. We had a ton of fun!

We want to thank everyone who has made a donation to the Indiegogo campaign so far (almost 30% raised!!!) for raising our spirits and keeping us on track! We are infinitely grateful!

Mighty Monday

After a bout of silence, WE ARE BACK! Today, we release our live video for “Blue Horizon,” a favorite of ours and a tune you’ll find on our upcoming full-length album Jettison. Reprise. set to release this fall.

This video was produced by IAM-All Media Indiana University. Shot by Cassie Harner, Zach Watt, and Vincent Holloway, with Shane Coogan on audio, and the wondrous editing skills of Jason Lataillade and Vincent Holloway. Each were fantastic to work with and very skilled in their respective areas. Thanks guys!!

Jettison. Reprise. 

Mighty Brother’s first full-length album is all tracked and final mixes are happening THIS WEEK! Is it weird we are putting out a comedy EP before our quite serious folk-rock album? We kind of think so too, but we don’t want to be pegged as a folk band or a comedy duo or anything really. 

If you chat us up outside the Bishop sometime, we’ll tell you we are songwriters. Pure and simple. We’ve written some comedy songs, some folk jams, borderline punk-rock stuff, as well as several indie-electronic songs in the works. We believe very much in songwriting as a process, and part of that is finding where a song wants to go. All genres are accessible and each uniquely interesting in their own right. We are not one flavor. We want the neapolitan of songwriting. So join us in our journey! 

Eric Day has been killin’ the mixing game and is rendering a product we are extremely excited for! Did I mention there are a dozen Jacob’s School of Music musicians on the album?? We’ve had the pleasure of wirking with some of Bloomington’s best and friendliest people. Can’t wait to share!

Mighty Brother’s comedy EP will drop this Friday at Rachel’s Cafe’s last show before closing. We are honored to bring you a night of good vibes and great music from local Jessie Lacy and out-of-towners Infinity Now (detroit) and The Hollow Ends (st. louis). 

van! will seat 3 songs, each with their own flavor, and... WILL SELL FOR ONLY $3 THIS FRIDAY.

We have found comedy to be the best truncation to the writing process. When you’re sitting there scrawling frantically, grasping uselessly for that finishing line, that final stanza, sweat, tears, blood... take a breather. Try writing something funny and stop taking yourself so seriously:) Voila! Comedy EP! 

Kyle Houpt of Russian Recording has been an invaluable collaborator on this project, lending his technical skills as an engineer, also bass lickin’ for all three tracks. Fantastic fellow. Diederik van Wassenaer also sawin’ some fiddle on two of the three. van! has been a lot of fun. Come have fun with us! (P.S. also shooting a music video for “van!” THIS WEDNESDAY!! What WHAT?!)

Told you we’ve been busy! If you’ve been keeping up with our live videos, you’ll be pleased to know we have 5 MORE VIDEOS to release after this one;), and on Friday we will be selling a live CD, to-be-title-aptly, complete with all 9 songs we have videos for.We will be releasing our cover of Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Aeroplane Over the Sea” this Friday pre-Rachel’s show. Watch for it!!

Mighty Monday

This past weekend we roadtripped to New Orleans where we will be moving in August. We were checking out as much of the city as we could, trying to find a place to live, and seeing as much live music as possible. So for MIGHTY MONDAY, here is a recap of our trip.

Wednesday, May 13th

After work we left Bloomington and drove to Birmingham. 

We Couchsurfed with the epitome of moral badassness, Marcus Fetch who runs an amazing non-profit bike shop, Redemptive Cycles. 

We stayed in his epic warehouse space called “The Compound,” had a late night skate sesh, and exchanged songs on the roof. 

Thursday, May 14th

Woke up to a home-cooked meal from the wonderful Marcus Fetch and completed the drive to NOLA.

Nick started the tradition of “Live Audio Books”...

Nick met with his advisor at UNO for grad school in Arts Management, and then visited Dancing Grounds, a dance education non-profit. 

We went to Armstrong Park and were welcomed to New Orleans by JAZZ IN THE PARK featuring a large brass band playing Summertime. The band had a washboard player, about 8 horn players, and even an octogenarian taking guitar solos. 

After meetings we connected with our Couchsurfing host, Andrew Hopkins for an evening of drinks and exploring Bourbon and Royal St. 

Friday, May 15th 

Friday morning, we ventured back to Royal Street to see the street musicians, and then got a CATFISH lunch at Little People in Treme (a locals bar).

The house hunt began as we drove to the Musicians Village in the 9th Ward neighborhood. We visited the Ellis Marsalis Music Center, a non-profit providing music education to underserved youth in the 9th ward. We found a beautiful home up for rent. 

We dropped in at the Busker’s Bunkhouse where nomadic artists and musicians can stay for free.

Laura, the director of Dancing Grounds, had invited us to their youth showcase at Akili schools. We dropped in for the packed performance and watched as the kids did Step, Hip-hop, Modern, and even Maculele. The work that Dancing Grounds is doing for the youth in NOLA is truly inspiring. 

We visited St. Roch and went to a Karaoke bar and brought the house down with a rendition of Superstition. After performing, a woman named Cary chatted with us, and told us she had a beautiful home with 2 extra bedrooms. (what!?)

We got our late night munchies on Frenchman Street at Dat Dog and our server was Christ. Christian, a guy from Mishawaka, Indiana... (again... what!?)

Saturday, May 16th

Ricardo, the house-owner in Musicians Village, called us over to check out his place. The home and community were beautiful, but the house was not quite in our price range.

As we were leaving feeling a bit money-stressed, Andrew invited us to a Crawfish Boil, which was a FREE Crawfish buffet complete with potatoes, corn, and a truck full of Crawfish. All we had to do was buy beer. 

With stomachs full of delicious free food and cheap beer, we visited Cary’s house. She owns a beautiful Creole Cottage that was within our price range! She has a pitbull named Twiggy, a porch where we can jam and Nick can learn to play tub and spoons,and a piano and jacuzzi.  So yea, if you’re ever looking for a home in NOLA... go sing Karaoke.

We celebrated our good fotrune by attending a free music festival called BAYOU BOOGALOO at St. John Bayou, and then busking on Royal St. We got $40 and a cigar in 2 hours. We bought our host a bottle of wine, and took the rest to get Cajun street food on Frenchman street. We explored, drank whiskey, smoked our cigar, and saw some cool music groups.

The night ended with a chance meeting with some Birmingham girls who knew Marcus (again... what!?) 

 Sunday, May 17th

We woke up, felt great about the weekend, bid adieu to Andrew, and started the 12 hour drive back to Bloomington featuring ukulele jamming, songwriting, and live audio books.  

Nick continued the tradition of Live Audio Books...
