#mightyadvent #21 - #WeirdWednesday - LGBTQ+ influencers speak up!
Hey there mighty people of the internet! And welcome to day 21 of #mightyadvent! - the series that I post daily on Tumblr until Christmas discussing different themes that differ per day of the week, so you (and I) don't get too bored. Also: Welcome to the third post of #WeirdWednesday! If you're wondering what #WeirdWednesday means: It's that weekly post where I tell you about the crazy stuff that happens and I totally don't get. Like HOW can that happen? What’s weird with this post? That no one speaks up! LGBTQ+ people of influence even hide because they fear the consequences of coming out. Why? When I picked today's topic, I wondered whether or not I need to introduce Ellen DeGeneres - or whether y'all will just laugh at me for assuming anyone might NOT know her. I thought better do something extra so everyone is on board, rather than not giving that extra information and confused people. So, without further ado: Who is Ellen DeGeneres? - American - Host of one of the most popular (if not THE most popular) late night shows on American TV: The Ellen Show - Openly lesbian and also a great activist for LGBTQ+ and general equality Why do I introduce Ellen in this post when it's about LGBTQ+ influencers using their influence? Two words: She. Does. She does use her influence to promote equality. She does speak up against any political issues she doesn't like. She meets all the great people in the show biz. And she just knows the f*ck what she is doing! Keep that up, Ellen!! Also: While writing this post I totally drifted off into Tyler Oakley slang. Typing this, I even read it as if he was reading it to me. Is that weird? You tell me! :P Okay, back to normal: As I said in the beginning of this post, Ellen is American. And when we take a look over the big blue ocean we find: Europe. And when we look for advocates of LGBTQ+ in show biz and other influencers, we see: Yes, that's right, we see nothing. Okay, barely anything to be honest. Tell me, if I'm wrong here - I would LOVE to, in this respect -, but, to me, it feels as if there are no real advocates, ambassadors for LGBTQ+ people in Europe. And it feels that even if society over here seems to become more and more accepting (in general - but there certainly are more a**holes as well), people of influence and popularity shy at speaking up openly about LGBTQ+ issues. In fact I feel that most even shy at stating that they have a partner of the same sex. And I get that! People are cruel. So called "fans" will drop them for the simple reason that they don't like their sexuality. Media outlets will exploit every bit and piece of the story to make yet another cover story demolishing them just to get clicks (or when we talk oldschool media: sales). Let's face it: Once society forms groups, they are ridiculously powerful and don't think about the consequences too much. Or at least they don’t give a f***. In Germany football is the most popular sport. I’m tempted to add “by far”, but I’m aware that I myself am a football fan and don’t follow any other sports on a professional level on a regular basis. So, German football is quite a business. Billions worth of turnover is made just from the top league. In top class we have 18 teams. For simplicity reasons, let’s assume that each team has only 18 players (that’s the amount you can bring to each match, but obviously you need some back-up). 18 players in each of the 18 teams makes 324 players. Assuming that the 7 % of the total population that are gay and bisexual in the Netherlands also fit Germany - the countries are after all pretty similar - 324 * 7 % = 22 or 23 players are gay or bisexual. And mind you: That are only the current players. And here is the $1 million question: How many are out? Correct: None. We have 1 - in letters: one, o-n-e - former professional player who came out as gay: Former national player Thomas Hitzlsperger. And "of course" he did so only a year after he had ended his career as a player. Why I use "of course"? Because it's just deemed "normal" that you don't come out when you're still actively playing football. That is: Professional football and if you are male. For the ladies people are way more accepting: Among others, Nadine Angerer - long-time keeper for the German national team - brings her wife to official events. We definitely need more people like Nadine! And most of all: More open-mindedness! To those celebs, who already do what needs to be done: Keep up your good work! For the rest: Consider joining them! You will help out so many people! And you don’t have to hide your true self anymore. Isn’t that worth it? What do you think of the topic? Should LBGTs be more present in the media? Why do you think they don't speak up or even hide? And also tell me what you think of the #WeirdWednesday concept. Let me know by placing a comment, tweeting me, dming me, or what else you can think of - you know the means to get to me. And obviously you may contact me with any questions and remarks - I don't bite. See you tomorrow for #TunesThursday as another part of #mightyadvent! Until then: Stay mighty!
