A slightly adorable bit of Luke backstory
From Star Wars #15, written by Jason Aaron, with art by Mike Mayhew.
Luke really does take after his biodad sometimes.
And, clearly sensing Skywalker nonsense brewing, his nominal godfather is watching from nearby, and, perhaps against his better judgement, hoping...
Yeah... well....
Again, strong Anakin vibes here, especially with the NEED to race!
There's something a little uncanny valley about the faces here... I think it's Luke's teeth, they follow you around the room.... (Ahem, I suspect photo references were used a lot here)
Yeah, whilst your concern for your nephew/son is admirable, I really don't think THAT'S going to last Owen, but Luke has someone else on his side.
Dear God would you STOP flirting for ONE moment Obi-Wan?!?
The next day at a trading meet. Owen takes Luke with him.
A secret gift? Who COULD it be from?
Mission accomplished!
Or is it? As there's a knock at the door of Obi-Wan's hut that evening.
Owen doesn't believe in short cuts, or uncalled for charity and he's not happy about interference.
Luke isn't getting to fly for a reason and for all his charm, and concern, Obi-Wan isn't Luke's guardian, Owen and Beru ARE, and that makes a difference.
I like this, Owen is not perfect, he is judgemental, and over-protective, and uses a low blow, but he is not afraid to call out what he see's a threat to someone entrusted to his care, and he KNOWS what Obi-Wan can do.
Now before you go away thinking that Owen was nothing but a heartless SOB, who is pointlessly cruel to Luke, which would be very wrong... from Star Wars #20, there's a follow up (from the same creative team)
Now this is sweet. Owen knows how much his punishment has hurt Luke, denying him the thing he enjoys most, so he's relenting, and though the parts may not be as shiny as Ben's, these are parts HE has obtained fair and square, and he wants to make this into a bonding exercise with Luke, something they can do together, to show that Owen still cares for him.
Of course, Wookie bounty hunter Black Krrsantan gets in the way. Ironically, this IS due to Obi-Wan, who we saw in an earlier issue taking steps to stop Jabba the Hutt extorting money from the Lars farm the way he did all the others, which led to a rather vicious battle ending in the deaths of several of Jabba's most trusted enforces at the wrong end of a lightsabre. Jabba doesn't know the details (or that a Jedi was involved) but he DOES know that no-one resists his "business propositions" and needs an example made, hence Wookie, who IS aware of Obi-Wan and sees c ahcance to combine business with settling an OLD debt, and Owen is a good pawn in Luke's absence
Because, meanwhile... Luke IS indulging the Skywalker drama queen side of his personality, luckily for him I suspect.
Now, I wonder what made him turn around at just that momen? What made him sense that there was trouble... the Force, maybe? Who can tell...
And if you leave Luke Skywalker, even at this age, in a maintenance bay with a broken vehicle, some supplies and repair equipment then... well, what do you THINK will happen?
There's a long fight scene between Obi-Wan and Black Krrsantan, which leads to, among other things, Owen pushed off a cliff, and who can possibly come to his rescue?
Somewhere in the depth of the galaxy far far away Darth Vader just punched the air triumphantly, and has no idea why.
So whilst Krrsantan makes his escape, Owen and Luke reunite, and Kenobi vanishes back into the dunes before Luke can spot him clearly.
And we end with confirmation of what we already know. That for all his bluster, Owen DOES love Luke like his own son, and that Luke loves him right back.
(a pity Beru wasn't featured a little more strongly here, but I like it for the depth it gives Owen)
