Friendly reminder that this is absolutely not the way that you look at the love of your life when they break up with you. 🤷🏻♂️
tb to when I was in my post-apocalyptic byler phase. I thought it didn’t really look like Mike at the time but I still kinda like it so I thought I’d post it now <3

I Will Wait By the River (I Will Wait For You)
June 2026 @bylermicrofic
Prompt: "Myth" Word Count: 502
“ — And then … they were never seen again! Their families and the cops searched for months, but to no avail. All that remained of the two lovers were their boots, placed neatly beside each other on the river bank, laces still tied.” Mike finished off his retelling with a flourish, wiggling his fingers in a creepy manner. He hoped the bonfire was casting suitable shadows on his face.
Will rolled his eyes amongst the unconcealed snorting laughter of Max and Lucas.
“You know, Hopper says they did end up actually finding the lost lovers of Eno River. They’re living in Vegas or something. Divorced,” Will snarked.
“Oh, whatever. Like you didn’t have nightmares the first time Nancy told us that story,” Mike quipped back, jabbing a pinch at Will’s side.
They were camped out in the woods surrounding the river itself. Rushing water had been the background noise to their week-long excursion into the outdoors the summer before sophomore year of college.
A lot had changed for all of them in that debut year into adulthood. But Will had changed more than anything, or maybe Mike had. It was hard to differentiate. Who initiated what? How had their relationship morphed from stilted friendship into hesitant roommates? How had that snowballed into practically eating each other's faces whenever they got the chance?
When the rest of The Party had gone to bed, they snuck out of the tent, dipping their feet in the river, fingers interlocked.
The moonlight cast lines of tree branches over Will’s face as he stared at the water.
“What are you thinking about?” Mike asked. Sometimes he wasn’t able to stop himself.
Will gave him a sad smile.
“I’m thinking about that couple … from the story.”
“What about them?”
Will let the fingers of his other hand trace into the surface of the river.
“I don’t know. I guess … I understand why they decided to just run away. To get away from everybody and just be on their own.”
Mike let his gaze drift down to the curve of Will’s lip. The huff of his breath.
“Me too.”
Will chuckled wryly. “Oh I know you do.”
Mike’s gut twisted. But he said nothing.
They weren’t really talking about it. The kissing. The sex. A year’s worth of changes that neither of them seemed to be able to keep up with. But they kept pushing, kept charging forward into this unknown thing. Just because they both wanted it bad enough to take the risk.
Maybe they should talk about it now. Maybe this was the moment Mike could say the thing he’d been holding in for far too long.
“I don’t want that. I think we should … I think we should tell people about us.”
Will’s eyebrows furrowed. He was quiet.
“Are you sure?”
Mike took Will’s face into his hands.
“I am,” he whispered. Pressing in gently to seal it with a kiss.
They wandered back to the tents. Not noticing their shoes left on the bank. Side by side.
Is now that the trailers out a good time to say I fully believe (and HAVE believed) Will is going to be possessed by Vecna and nearly killed, and THAT is the moment Mike’s gonna say everything in a reflection of what he said to Eleven at the pizza place while she fought Vecna but to WILL the person who the painting was really from
Imagine we get to the end of the series, and it turns out the throughline of the show all along was two boys in the 80s falling in love and accepting their sexuality under the cover of supernatural shenanigans
wait if i write a byler reunion au where mike’s daughters gift him chapell roan tour tickets as a joke (they record a “giving our dad (who’s probably repressing something) chapell roan tour tickets for his bday” tiktok) and despite his initial hesitation, he ends up going and reunites with will in the pit??? after 20 year of no contact???? open mouthed, dumbfounded and prolonged eye contact during good luck, babe??? anyone see the vision????
