The wild thing about like, the new interview is that people are pretending that Millar and Gough have been Queerbaiting and- Guys, they have ALWAYS been upfront about pursuing their creative instincts, they have ALWAYS been upfront about Wednesday and Enid being a friendship, they called it a Sisterhood back in 2022, THREE years ago.
The marketing uses Wednesday and Enid because they are the core friendship of the show, plus they know that Enid is a popular character, but that’s the business side of things, when we are talking about the actual show itself, there has never been a single moment where Millar and Gough have played coy about the relationship, even more recently the word used to describe it is friendship, not just by them but by Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers too.
They have ALWAYS said that they wouldn’t be misdirected by fans, they have always been upfront about it.
Now, if this was going down like what happened with Teen Wolf, then we’d be having problems and a discussion about Queerbaiting. But it’s not going down like what happened with Teen Wolf.
Wednesday is a show about Wednesday and her many relationships, platonically speaking above all else, her family, her friends, Tyler is a smaller aspect and it is smart to reroute back in and leave him as the one possible romantic thread whilst potentially NEVER getting them back together and evolving that dynamic outside of the romantic angle into let’s say, a Nemesis one as that provides a unique relationship for the writers and actors to explore in conjunction and opposition to the others around Wednesday, it creates diversity in her group of characters she interacts with.
And like, it not being romantic between Wednesday and Enid doesn’t mean that none of these characters are queer or potentially queer, doesn’t mean that those two characters aren’t potentially queer. It’s simply that recently, fandom has become so focused on queerness in the context of a romantic relationship and not as a very real, human concept, that transcends the bounds of the relationships we have, you do not stop being queer if you are single or in a relationship with the opposite sex and I know a lot of people know that, so why are people yelling?
Now I get the disappointment, I get feeling like they don’t care about the fanbase but… How would any creative feel if someone tried to come in and tell them what to do with their work? They have been more than polite in telling people they are gonna do what they want, the wording of “fan-fucked” was a misstep in my opinion though, PR wise.
But, take a step back and read other interviews, watch other interviews with members of the cast, who are all excited and happy and eager for people to see season 2 and if a cast is this outwardly happy then it tends to be a good ride regardless.
And I, as a lesbian, as a Nonbinary person, went through Voltron, through multiple projects where Queerbait was ON the table, I have pattern recognition and Wednesday does not follow the pattern in the same way.
So, yell, scream, but stop pretending like you have authority over a project that’s not yours, you can be critical, but you aren’t gonna change their minds and they have made that ABUNDANTLY clear.
…….Okay, that’s my two cents. Have a good day lads
