Static Shock Appreciation Week Day 4 .What do you hope to see included in future Static incarnations ?
If Static ever get’s a new comic series or cartoon or movie or TV show I want the characters who were created from the cartoon to be included. Especially Riche. The show had a lot of original characters who weren’t in the comics. They were good characters. I would like to see them again. I would also like see characters who didn’t show up in the cartoon to appear again. Like Dusk.
I’m done. I’m SO done trying to help anyone do anything. I’m done with the Black Panel, the Bad Boy Studio mentor program, and Dream City my free management company. Don’t know any of my work? Here. My disdain started when a rumor damn near became fact. The rumor spreading like a Donald Trump lie was that Milestone stole their business plan from Brotherman. It damn near broke my heart. But then,…
CBR TV: Hudlin & Cowan Talk Milestone 2.0, Cultural Significance, Accessible Books & More - Reginald Hudlin and Denys Cowan discuss the return of Milestone, why its characters and stories matter, Christopher Priest's return and much more.
Interview: Milestone 2.0’s Reggie Hudlin and Denys Cowan (Pt. 2)
Welcome to Part 2! (Here’s Part 1 for those who missed it!) In this part of our interview, Hudlin and Cowan discuss the “Black comics for Black people” label, Milestone merchandise, new characters/costumes, some of the legendary writer/artists joining the team, and more!
The original Milestone Media’s attempt to be more inclusive sometimes had the opposite effect, with comic shop owners categorizing (and marketing) Milestone comics as something intended solely for Black people. Cowan and Hudlin shared their thoughts on what to do about that this time around:
Cowan: I don’t even think about that kind of thing. We have to do what we do, and do it that best way we can, the most honest way we can…as far as telling people: “This is not Black comic books for Black people. This is comic books for everybody”…there are people who could do that job. That’s not one of our responsibilities.
Part of what we do is tell the real experience of Black people in this country through this medium. We also do a lot of other stuff. I don’t know if we have any specific plans to change people’s perception. I think people’s perception will be based on what we eventually do.
Hudlin believes that changes within the U.S. itself, due in part to the legacy of the original Milestone, will have taken care of some of those problems already:
Hudlin: The country has changed in the intervening time [between the original Milestone and 2.0]. Milestone played a part in that change. The fact is, because Milestone did good work, a whole generation of non-Black kids grew up loving a Black superhero named Static Shock...
Hudlin: Those non-Black fans are very excited about those characters coming back. There’s going to be new fans who don’t have any racial hangups….At the end of the day, if the work is good it crosses over…Quality of execution is underrated as a crossover tool.
Cowan: Comic book shops had a large part in that perception back in those days. If you had comic book shop owners categorizing your material in a certain way and either selling it or not selling it because of their ignorance or whatever, there wasn’t much to do about that. However, as Reggie said, these are different days…People can get their books without the filter of somebody saying “Oh you don’t want this because you’re White and these are for Black people.” Quite frankly, that probably made more people buy it in some places. We have so many ways of reaching people now…
As Hudlin pointed out in Part 1, the name of the company is Milestone Media. We’ve known for some time now that both comics and live-series are on the timeline. Most recently, a Static Shock figurine was announced. Cowan says there’s more on the way!
Cowan: You saw the Static Shock prototype…Icon, Rocket and Hardware are the next in line. Those are the things I’m currently, and have done, a lot of designs for. DC Collectables are the ones putting out the line. It’s part of the “DC Comics Icons” line.
Cowan: They’re all the first incarnations of the character. So Static Shock has his first uniform on from issue #1, with the “X” cap and everything else.
There’s no timetable regarding other Milestone merchandise just yet. They say the best thing you can do is express interest via social media. They can’t promise a reply but they read everything!
Cowan: We both follow things on social media. [We read] fan’s suggestions. It’s always good to hear from our fans and we love to interact. At the end of the day, we’re always going to do what we feel is best for the characters and the stories we want to tell. But that being said, Milestone Media loves its fans. So we encourage everybody to contribute, to write, to let us know how you feel about stuff.
Some have been wondering if using the old costumes for the figures means they’ll be used in the upcoming series, or if they’re working on something new:
Hudlin: It starts with the character stuff. Costume reflects character….We look at the character and think about who they are and who we want them to be…Based on that we play with looks. Denys is such a brilliant designer. He’s not just a great artist. He comes up with great costume ideas and he’s been doing some great sketches for a number of characters not currently named…
There’s nothing better than getting an email from Denys Cowan…seeing some cool new art and you’re like: “Oh! OH!” At the same time, we’re not going to fix what isn’t broken. So it’s a character by character decision.
I tried to dig a little deeper into what’s going on with those new characters, but it’s still too soon to share much:
Hudlin: They’re all still in formation. We have some ideas. As more and more players get involved…We’re talking with great writers like Christopher Priest. Jim Lee did some sketches...
Cowan: Ken Lashley has done some drawings for us that are awesome. There’s stuff going on…
Hudlin: There’s a ricochet effect. As these brilliant people each make their contribution you go, “Wait a minute! Hold on!” It’s like that volcano in Hawaii that’s making a new island. [Laughs]
The tricky thing about this whole thing is that it’s been growing so fast. Just trying to manage growth, manage expectations…Right now it’s only a couple of us doing a lot of stuff. Later, when the company builds out, I guess more people will make the work easier…
We talked briefly about who some of those people might be and which creators they’ve been paying attention to lately:
Hudlin: There’s a lot of great work happening in the indie space! I’ve always been a fan of the Watson and Holmes book. I think that’s a great comic...David Walker is awesome, Concrete Park is a really great book!
That’s it for Part 2. In part Part 3 we talk about: What’s next for Blood Syndicate, Static Shock’s live series, Hudlin’s thoughts on Black Panther, and diversity in comics/the writers’ room.
Also, look out for a separate in-depth article with information and tips regarding pitching to Milestone as a writer/artist! In the meantime, head this way to share your thoughts on this interview!
